History of the LT5 Prototypes.

Whenthe ZR1 program started (originally known as the LT5 program) in 1985 GeneralMotors agreed that Lotus in England would develop their overhead cam V8 engineto GM specifications. Once the test rig engines had undergone their initialtrials at Lotus twenty test ‘mules’ or narrow bodied 1986 Corvettes, strippedof their engines and transmissions, were sent to England along with one intactcontrol car. Lotus stripped and modified these cars to install the developmentengines thus they became the first ZR1 prototypes with the LT5 engines. Thecars were used in many countries for a variety of development purposes such asemission control, cold and hot weather testing, 6 speed gearbox development andhigh speed oil surge monitoring.

Oncetheir working life was complete, essentially after the wide bodied Corvetteswere made available to the development teams during 1987, all these carsincluding those still in England were scrapped during 1988.

Thewide bodied ZR1 was officially introduced to the world at the 1989 Geneva carshow but full production started for the 1990 model year.

When, late in '94, some Corvettes were discovered in a junkyard in Norfolk, England, later to become known as the English ‘Corvette Graveyard’, investigation provedthat these neglected remains were the original development prototype ZR1's thathad been scrapped. The phase 1 engined car, GM project number P8Y044 washeavily damaged but considered restorable - the car has been restored therest is history.
