Testing For Current Drain That Runs Down Car Battery

When your car battery runs down when the car is just parked and won't start the car after a few days, most people assume it's a short circuit. Shorts tend to fix themselves by melting things, it's probably a current drain. You can find out with an inexpensive multimeter with a DC Amp Scale. http://www.ifitjams.com/circuit.htm

How To Perform a Parasitic Draw Test - EricTheCarGuy
http://www.ericthecarguy.com/ This video has been a long timing coming and is one of the most requested things I get is about batteries going dead overnight so I'm very happy to finally bring you this video about the process of finding a parasitic draw which is a small drain on a battery above 50ma when the vehicle is shut off. Once you find the right fuse(s) the next step is to trace the components involved in that circuit till you find the source of the draw, you first start with a wiring diagram to give you an idea of where to start looking and then start unplugging things in that circuit to isolate the cause, it's quite scientific really a simple process of elimination. Here is a link to BBB's site that you can use to look up wiring diagrams for your application. http://www.bbbind.com/tech_database.html Good luck and if you have anymore questions check the database on my website and if you don't find what you're looking for there then post your question to my forum, here's a link. http://www.ericthecarguy.com/forum/default.aspx --- Click below and Stay Dirty Visit me at EricTheCarGuy.com http://ericthecarguy.com/ Visit EricTheCarGuy Forum http://www.ericthecarguy.com/forum/default.aspx Visit my Facebook Page: http://www.facebook.com/EricTheCarGuy --- Be safe, have fun, and stay dirty ETCG Due to factors beyond the control of EricTheCarGuy, it cannot guarantee against unauthorized modifications of this information, or improper use of this information.  EricTheCarGuy assumes no liability for property damage or injury incurred as a result of any of the information contained in this video. EricTheCarGuy recommends safe practices when working with power tools, automotive lifts, lifting tools, jack stands, electrical equipment, blunt instruments, chemicals, lubricants, or any other tools or equipment seen or implied in this video.  Due to factors beyond the control of EricTheCarGuy, no information contained in this video shall create any express or implied warranty or guarantee of any particular result.  Any injury, damage or loss that may result from improper use of these tools, equipment, or the information contained in this video is the sole responsibility of the user and not EricTheCarGuy.

How to Find A Car Battery Drain
In this video I show how to determine the amount of current that is being drawn from the car battery while your car is turned off. I made a similar video before, but it seemed that a lot of you wanted me to actually take of the cable. So that's what I did lol. The amount of current being drawn from your battery can help you determine whether there is a legitimate problem or not. If your battery keeps dying and the draw is less than 50 mA then the problem is the battery, but if the draw is greater than 50 mA then the problem is something other than your battery. Automotive Repair: Locating Battery Drain Using Voltage Drop
http://workshop.search-autoparts.com You can't measure voltage drop across a resistance unless current is flowing, right? Well, if something is draining the battery, there must be current flowing where there shouldn't be. SO...let's measure across easily accessible resistors...the fuses! And see where that current flow is. Click this link to subscribe to Motor Age! http://bit.ly/MA_YT_freesub

Finding a active short
A fuse that keeps on blowing is an active problem and can be difficult to find. However if you use these steps, you should be able to locate and repair it.

Parasitic drain, an automotive short circuit that may cause a recurring dead battery
I describe a practical algorithm for diagnosis and investigation of parasitic drain in an automotive electrical system. This problem typically presents with the recurring problem of a dead battery when the car is parked and not used for hours to days. Parasitic draw is a low amperage, high resistance short circuit that persists even when the ignition key is turned off. This video is published for entertainment purposes only, and it is not to be construed as an instruction guide. If you need help with an automotive problem you should carefully assess your limitations, and consider consulting a professional before getting in over your head. Be careful to protect yourself and to protect your property by not doing something you are unqualified to do....

How To Check A Charging System - EricTheCarGuy
How To Check A Charging System - EricTheCarGuy http://www.ericthecarguy.com/ Well this is by request and is a companion to checking a battery so I think I'll post it as a response to that video. I try to make things easy for you and I think this test fits the bill, you can even use the same tester or just a regular DVOM which is something I think you should have if you are serious about working on cars, I hope to do an entire series on using one of these so be sure to have one.
