[02-Jun-2010] Euro NCAP launched its website www.euroncap.com for the first time in two new languages: Dutch and French. Euro NCAP intends to release further languages Catalan, German, Italian, Polish, Spanish and the Swedish in the following months. Euro NCAP also releases the results for three new cars: the Alfa Romeo Giulietta, BMW 5-series and the Mazda CX-7. Of these three cars, the BMW 5 series achieved the highest result in pedestrian protection with a respectable 78%. The car has an active bonnet, so that when a pedestrian is struck, the bonnet is lifted from its position as a result, creating more space to absorb the energy that usually results in injury. The BMW 5 series also scored 100% in Safety Assist as the car has electronic stability control fitted as standard, seatbelt reminders in the front and rear, as well as a driver set speed limitation device. The Alfa Romeo Giulietta is equipped with a reactive seat and head restraint offering good protection.
2012 Audi A6 CRASH TEST
The passenger compartment remained stable in the frontal impact. The A6 is fitted with Audi's adaptive frontal airbags and seat belts. Sensors in the front seat rails detect whether an occupant is positioned close to the steering wheel (a small driver, for example) or more rearwards. The restraint system is tuned accordingly, using special vents in the airbags and seat belt load limiters adapted to the appropriate occupant size. In the frontal test, the system worked well and both the driver and passenger's heads were well protected. Dummy readings indicated good protection of the dummies' knees and femurs. Audi showed that the car would provide a similar level of protection to occupants of different sizes and to those sat in different positions. In the side barrier impact, the dummy indicated good protection of all body regions. However, the driver's door was found to be unlatched after the test and the car was penalised for this. In the pole test, the car provided marginal protection of the driver's chest. The seat and head restraint provided good protection against whiplash injuries in the event of a rear-end collision.

In the more severe side pole test, protection of the chest and abdomen was adequate and that of the head and pelvis was good. The seat and head restraint provided good protection against whiplash injuries in the event of a rear-end collision.
Based on dummy restults in the dynamic tests, the 3 Series scored maximum points for its protection of the 18 month infant, and lost only a fraction of a point for protection of the 3 year old. In the frontal impact, forward movement of the head of the 3 year dummy, sat in a forward facing restraint, was not excessive. In the side impact, both dummies were properly contained by the protective shells of their restraints, minimising the likelihood of contact with parts of the car's interior. A switch is available as an option to deactivate the passenger airbag, allowing a rearward facing child restraint to be used in the passenger seat. This was not assessed as it is not standard equipment. There were clear warnings of the dangers of using a rearward facing restraint in that seating position without having deactivated the airbag.
Both the bumper and the front edge of the bonnet provided good protection to pedestrians and the car scored maximum points in these areas. In almost all areas where a child's head might strike, the bonnet provided good protection but was predominantly poor in those areas likely to be struck by an adult's head.
