AMERICAN ECONOMY CAR IMPORT, THE NASH METROPOLITAN
AFTER YEARS OF DELAY, NASH MOTORS LAUNCHED THEIR FOREIGN MADE ECONOMY CAR IN 1954, THE NASH METROPOLITAN. IT WAS DESIGNED BY NASH BUT PRODUCED IN GREAT BRITAIN BY AUSTIN MOTORS FOR ENGINES, AND FISHER & LUDLOW MADE THE BODIES. THE BODIES WERE HARDTOPS AND CONVERTIBLES. EXPORTED TO THE U.S. AND CANADA ONLY THE FIRST TEN THOUSAND CARS HAD A 1200-CC ENGINE, AND A 1500-CC STARTING IN AUGUST '54. BOTH ENGINES WERE OHV 4 CYLINDERS. THE TWO PASSENGER CARS HAD AN 85 INCH WHEELBASE AND WEIGHED ABOUT 1,800 LBS. THE HARDTOP COST $1,469 AND THE CONVERTIBLES COST $ 1,445. GAS MILEAGE WAS FIGURED AT 40 MILES PER GALLON. FROM '53 TO '54, ALMOST 14,000 METROS WERE MANUFACTURED. WHEN YOU VIEW THIS VIDEO, NOTICE THE RAISED VENT PORTS IN FRONT OF THE WINDSHIELD, AND ALSO NOTE THE BEADED METAL THAT OUTLINES A TRUNK LID THAT DOES NOT EXIST. NOT UNTIL 1959 ANYWAY. IF YOU WANTED TO STOWE SOMETHING IN THE TRUNK AREA, PULL THE BACK SEAT FORWARD AND STUFF WHATEVER BEHIND THE SEAT. DON'T KNOW WHY THEY NEVER HAD AN OPENING TRUNK LID FOR SIX YEARS, BUT IT MUST HAVE BEEN INCONVENIENT. ALSO NOTICE THE FAMOUS NASH HOOD ORNAMENT. SCULPTED FROM A REAL NUDE FEMALE MODEL, THESE HOOD ORNAMENTS ALWAYS GRACED METROS. METROS ALWAYS HAD A SPARE TIRE MOUNTED ON THE REAR. METROS USUSALLY CAME IN TWO-TONE COLOR COMINATIONS THE MOST COMMON COLORS BEING BLACK, RED, TURQUOISE, YELLOW, AND GREEN WHICH WAS COMPLIMENTED BY WHITE PAINT. This is a local Southern California "Blue-Plate" car that is completely rust-free and has been fully restored. This is the rare and desirable Series IV model with the upgraded engine, rear decklid and vent window model that was introduced in 1959. This motorcar has been well restored by a local southern California vintage sports car engineer and racer. The car is restored to original specifications and is in car show and touring condition as opposed to concours condition.
The drivetrain was thoroughly rebuilt and the car disassembled for repaint in its original livery colors of tangerine and white exterior with black and white interior. In the process of the restoration, the previous owner decided to change the rear end ratio from an inefficient 4.22: 1 to 3.9: 1. He also acquired new axles to ensure durability.
He bought the car 11 years ago from a neighbor who had owned it for many years and had bought it in Los Angeles. The car has been in California since new. In 1999 the car had amassed a total of 97,779 miles. A detailed maintenance log from the previous owner is included, which covers ministerial details such as tire pressure readings and oil changes as well as restoration activities. By 2000 he had broke 100,000 miles and today the car has a total odometer reading since new of 103,950 miles. Since the rebuild it has accumulated approximately 3,000 miles.
The car was repainted and reupholstered over the past year, including most of the stainless trim replaced, new window rubbers, seals, tires, etc.

Hannu Mäkelä muistelee Leo-isän tuhahtaneen kotimatkalla, että kyllä nyt ostettiin kallis auto, mutta tehty mikä tehty.
