The first few miles behind the wheel of the 2010 Lexus HS 250h trigger a cascade of questions about this new car's reason for being. Why a four-cylinder engine in a luxury car? Why not simply Lexus-ize the existing Toyota Camry Hybrid? Why introduce a new sedan that is so similar in size to the existing Lexus ES 350 in the first place?
But it doesn't take more than a couple of days to have these questions answered. Clearly, Lexus sees no paradox in the addition of a full hybrid to its lineup of luxury cars. Despite the fact that the 2010 Lexus HS 250h with its modest 2.4-liter gasoline engine is closer in concept to the Toyota Prius than the Lexus LS 600h, this new model nevertheless effectively represents the Lexus idea of luxury, safety and convenience in the same way that its six- and eight-cylinder stable mates do.
It's a Lexus-style hybrid, because practicality and efficiency are legitimate Lexus values, too. Is everybody on the same page now?

We're sensing an eerie state of calm from the Lexus officials at the introduction of the 2010 Lexus HS 250h in Newport Beach, California. It's the kind of calm you experience at a poker table, when you're waiting for the other guy to finally lay down his cards.
Then it happens. An executive cheerily admits that he hasn't a clue about how well this newest member of the Lexus family will be received by the marketplace. Fuel prices are too volatile, he says.
In this line of work, a response like this would normally be intercepted by the brain in its formative state and its utterance prevented. So either the Lexus brass is speaking the truth or they're simply being coy.
We would find out later that it's some combination of the two.

Porsche Panamera Driven! Exclusive First Drive by Edmunds
FOR FULL PANAMERA STORY @ INSIDELINE.COM:
www.insideline.com
"Hey, how fast is 255 kilometers per hour?" asks our videographer, John Adolph, to a colleague seated behind him. "Because this sure doesn't feel like we're going that fast."
The silence that follows says more about the 2010 Porsche Panamera than anything else we experience in our three-day drive. From the driver seat, with my mental calculator in high gear, I glance in the rearview mirror and witness the unlikely. That colleague is asleep. Here. In a Porsche. On the autobahn.
It had taken a few long days on airplanes to arrive in Bavaria and none of us had slept well. But the fact that this guy managed to do it now means that the new Panamera is, as Porsche claims, a true four-door GT.
Just as I'm wrapping my mind around these facts, my calculator finishes the math. The speed? 158.1 mph. With a sleeping passenger. Sheesh.

MPG is still what you think about when you drive a 2010 Toyota Prius.
You can't stop watching the hybrid car's instant fuel economy bar graph. In the 2010 Prius, this graph has moved from the navigation screen to the dash-top instrument panel, so playing the Prius mpg game doesn't force you to take your eyes far from the road ahead. It's fun in a way that Jeff Jarvis, the author of What Would Google Do?, would surely understand.
