Valvetronic engines use a combination of hardware and programing to abolish the need for a regular throttle mechanism.
Valvetronic varies the lift of the intake valves. Based on signals formerly taken mechanically from the accelerator pedal position sensor, the stepper motor changes the phase of the eccentric cam, modifying the action of the intake valves. This system has a conventional intake cam, but it also uses a secondary eccentric shaft with a series of levers and cam followers, activated by an electronic stepper motor.
The Valvetronic engine replaces the function of the throttle body by using infinitely variable intake valve lift. Valvetronic has its own computer housed in a separate unit away from the engine management system, networked through CAN network with the digital engine management system incorporating a 40-megahertz, 32 or 64 bit computer.
Valvetronic reduces maintenance costs, lowers Exhaust emissions, improves cold start behavior, and provides a smoother running engine. It also does not need specific fuel grades or fuel qualities because of its fine atomization of fuel.
Because Valvetronic allows the engine to breathe ...

The Vanos system is BMW's answer to variable valve timing. It is an electro hydraulic system and it also often needs maintenance.
The later-model six-cylinder engines have a mechanism that allows for variable advancing of the camshaft timing. We recomend
watching our other Vanos video. The VANOS unit is an electromechanical unit that uses a hydraulic piston to rotate the
camshaft timing at higher rpm. This unit is controlled electronically by a solenoid connected to the engine management system
DME, also called ECU.
Here we will show you how to replace the Vanos solenoid and hydraulic hose, which is often ignored as a standard repair. The VANOS unit is hydraulically operated using...

VANOS is BMW's answer to variable valve timing. It is a combined hydraulic and mechanical camshaft control mechanism, managed by the car's DME engine management system.
At the lower end of the engine-speed scale, the intake valves are opened later, which improves idling quality and smoothness. At moderate engine speeds, the intake valves open much earlier, which Boosts torque and permits Exhaust gas re-circulation inside the combustion chambers, reducing fuel consumption and Exhaust emissions. Finally, at high engine speeds, intake valve opening is once again delayed, so that full power can be developed. VANOS operates on the intake camshaft in accordance with engine speed and accelerator pedal position.
VANOS significantly enhances emission management, increases output and torque, and offer better fuel economy. The latest version of VANOS is double-VANOS, used, among others, in the new M3.
The VANOS system is based on an adjustment mechanism that can modify the position of the intake camshaft versus the crankshaft. Double-VANOS adds an ....

BMW X-Drive 4X4 System
BMW X-Drive 4X4 System
Get the book here: https://www.createspace.com/4278102
The BMW all-wheel drive or 4X4 system, called X-Drive, ensures that the vehicle has the best traction all the time, improves agility and keeps you safely on lane.
When parking, the system reacts to the need for high manoeuvrability at low speed, by opening the clutch completely so the powertrain functions optimally. Acting virtually instantaneously and in a manner as to go virtually unnoticed by the vehicle's driver. X-Drive can direct up to 100% of drive forces to one axle and allow the driver to start up quickly, even on slippery surfaces or steep hills. X-Drive directs all power to the axles with the greatest wheel traction.
X-Drive is the all time, all-wheel drive or 4X4 system from BMW. Under normal circumstances, it distributes driver power between the front and rear axles in a nominal 45-55 ratio, and changes this figure depending on when the road surface or overall driving conditions change. X-Drive allows power to be split between the front and rear axles through use of a multiplate clutch located between the gearbox and the drive shaft. This setup allows X-Drive vehicles to split power in virtually any way it pleases. Torque can be transferred to the front wheels via electronically controlled multi plate clutch that is located in the transfer case. X-Drive does not have a center differential. Most of the time, the clutch is partially locked and power is transferred to both axles in proportion 45-55 front to rear. The power distribution can be altered to continuously variable levels from 50-50 to 0-100.
Driving on a winding road in fast style is .....

Variable CAM Timing
Variable CAM Timing
Variable CAM timing is a concept that entails changing the camshaft timing, as needed, depending on engine LOAD demands. This technology was impossible just a few years ago, due to the state of the art electronics needed. The latest Variable CAM Timing (VCT) systems are infinitely variable, meaning they have no specified settings. CAM timing can be changed or varied instantaneously across the whole range (ie. Plus or Minus 30 degrees from normal). By varying the CAM timing, the ECM can regulate the power curve to meet its own needs. On any gasoline engine, each RPM setting has an optimum CAM timing setting, depending on load. Up until a few years ago engines were set whatever the CAM lobes were machined at. With modern VCT, this relationship can be varied, also varying the engine's power curve. Most modern VCT systems do not control valve lift, but do great by simply changing open and close timing points during engine operation. See how it works here, with this superbly animated training video on automotive technology and variable cam timing (VCT).

BMW four cylinder gasoline engine with Twin Power Turbo Technology
The significant upgrade in power and efficiency is chiefly down to the use of BMW TwinPower turbo technology, which combines High Precision Direct Fuel Injection, Double-Vanos variable camshaft timing and VALVETRONIC variable valve timing along with twin-scroll turbocharging. On the new-generation 4-cylinder engine, this world-exclusive technology package from BMW again provides a very efficient way to extract more power from the engine, rather than taking the route of a much larger displacement and, in the process, adding to the weight and therefore to fuel consumption. This explains why the more dynamic performance and driving enjoyment does not come at the expense of higher fuel consumption and emissions.

Make sure to prime the engine with oil before starting. Unplug the coil packs and pull the fuel pump relay. Triple check by hand before doing so. This is just an example of what to look for. Please check with your factory manuals for additional info.
