The 1.2 liter, 1.4 liter and 1.6 liter four-cylinder gasoline engines feature dual-overhead camshafts and variable valve timing. Their a cast-iron cylinder block is based on a hollow frame structure. The 1.2 liter and 1.4 liter engines feature a cast-iron bedplate that provides a stiffer structure, resulting in quieter and smoother engine performance. The 1.6 liter engine has a toothed timing belt that has a change interval of every 10 years or 160,000 kilometers.
Fuel consumption on a combined cycle is 5.1 liters/100 km for the 86 hp version of the 1.2 liter engine and 6.6 liters/100 km in the case of the 1.6 liter engine coupled with a manual transmission. The 1.2 liter Ecotec gasoline engine will emit 119 g of CO2 per km.
The Aveo will be the first Chevrolet small car to sport a six-speed automatic transmission. One of its principal advantages is the positioning of the gear sets which have been placed on the same axis as the engine crankshaft centerline. Among the benefits resulting from this modification are a shorter powertrain, a lower hood line and increased interior space.

At the North American International Auto Show in Detroit, MI in 2011, General Motors is introducing the 2012 Buick Verano, the GMC Sierra All Terrain HD Concept and the Chevrolet Sonic. The Verano is a compact luxury sedan that goes on sale in the fourth quarter of 2011, the Sonic is Chevrolet's small car built in America (called the Aveo in other parts of the world, and GMC's new concept is an exploration of heavy-duty truck capability combined with greater off-road versatility.
► 2012 Chevrolet Camaro Convertible
The Chevrolet Camaro opens a new chapter as the 2011 Camaro convertible premieres at the Los Angeles International Auto Show. The new convertible begins production in January and goes on sale in February. It includes an enhanced body structure and well-tailored top mechanism -- a combination designed to deliver sports coupe-like driving fun and precise quality. The convertible will be offered in similar model configurations as the Camaro coupe. The standard model will have a 312-horsepower direct injection V-6 engine delivering 29 mpg highway. The SS model will feature the 6.2L V-8 engine producing 426 horsepower. A six-speed manual transmission will be standard, with an optional six-speed automatic.
2012 Chevrolet Aveo CRASH TEST
The passenger compartment remained stable in the frontal impact. Dummy readings indicated good protection for the knees and femurs of both the driver and front passenger dummies and Chevrolet showed that a similar level of protection would be offered to occupants of different sizes and to those sat in different seating positions. The Aveo scored maximum points in the side barrier test, all body regions being well protected. Even in the more severe pole test, the chest was adequately protected. The seat and head restraint provided good protection against whiplash injuries in the event of a rear-end collision.
Maximum points were scored in the dynamic tests for the protection of the 3 year infant. The passenger airbag can be disabled to allow a rearward facing child restraint to be used in that seating position. Clear information is provided to the driver regarding the status of the airbag and the system was rewarded by Euro NCAP. Permanently attached labels also provide clear warnings that the passenger airbag should be disabled before a rearward facing child seat can be used in that position.

The Chevrolet Aveo boasts high levels of standard equipment, and a new, motorbike-inspired interior. The funky rev counter and LED speedometer add a sporty touch to the Aveo's cabin, while the coupe-inspired styling, including hidden rear door handles and aggressive headlights, adds even more kerbside appeal. The Aveo is more practical than the excellent Suzuki Swift, and with prices set to undercut many of the class leaders, Chevrolet has created a tempting package. A new diesel version should also be one of the most frugal cars in its class too.
