2L Turbocharged Zetec on the Dyno
This is a 2 litre turbo Zetec I built many years ago. The rough starting was due to it a) being a brand new calibration and b) the starter motor was causing some electrical noise resulting in the ECU re-setting itself randomly on crank. It made just over 300bhp on the Dyno before a small crack was discovered around one of the spark plugs in the head. This didn't affect the running of the engine at all but the mapping wasn't able to be 100% completed. Even though, this engine produced over 300 ft-lb of torque from 2700-6000rpm. The engine was stripped down and checked, all OK and a brand new head installed. No longer required for the project, this engine was sold on.

Timing Belt - VCT Delete - Oil Pump Front Seal Replacement Ford Zetec Engine.
This video shows you how to replace the timing belt on a Ford Escort ZX2. It also shows you how to delete the VCT gear for use of an adjustable gear and how to replace the front oil seal. Other Zetec engines are similar enough (from 1998 up, prior engines are similar but don't use VCT) that you can use this video to do the timing but removal of other parts around it (like the overflow bottle is in the way on some non-ZX2's) may not be the same and not all Zetec's have the VCT mechanism. I used to sell this video on Ebay and I've sold about 200 of them over the years and only once has anyone complained about it not being useful and he had a Focus. He apparently didn't read the listing where I said the video was shot on a ZX2. Anyway, I'm sure you'll find this video helpful and please don't forget to rate and share it.
You should also note that the Zetec engine in the ZX2, Contour, Mystique, Cougar, Escape, and Focus (not SVT) are non-interference despite what a mechanic or even a Ford dealer might tell you. I even show in the video why it is this way and prove it by cranking my engine over with the belt off and the cams locked.
ford focus svt timing belt
PLEASE NOTE! I filmed this with my ipod nano and i had it upside down so it mirrored everything for some reason. It's really weird...so everything is opposite of where it should be in the video. For example, in the video it appears that my coil pack and spark plug wires are on the left but they are on the right in real life, so just try and picture your motor. Never gonna film upside down again lol...
Also, after putting it all back together and driving, It lacked power and I quickly got a CEL/code for cam timing over retarded or over advanced. I thought I had done something wrong but I decided to try one more thing before tearing into it again. I replaced the VCT solenoid which is the little cylinder/tower on the side near the cam gears. It controls when the cam timing advances in high rpms with oil pressure. Anyways, I replaced it and bam, no more check engine light and power was back. The intake runners (IMRC) were switching over at high rpm's every time again. Sounds awesome. So I did do everything right and it turns out it was the vct solenoid the whole time. A friend and I were curious as to why the old one was not working and after removing it we connected it to a 12v battery with wire leads going to the 2 metal tabs on the vct solenoid's connector to give it power and it was not moving very much. Something inside it moves but it was sticking/seizing. It lasted over 100,000 miles though so I wasn't mad at it lol. I might have been able to save it by leaving it in brake/carb/parts cleaner overnight to free it up but I just bought a new one for about $80.
