2011 Lexus LFA Tokyo Motor Show LIVE

Enjoy & Comment!
We've been spying the 2011 Lexus LFA, off and on, for over a year. We've seen it testing all over Europe. It's even contested the 24 Hours of Nurburgring in race car form--twice. But today the car was revealed during a brief test drive in Miami just before its official unveiling, due this week at the Tokyo Motor Show.
The car has been in development for the past nine years, during which time a total of three different concepts have been revealed. Output will come from a 4.8-liter 72-degree V-10 engine and peaks at 560-horsepower at a lofty 8,700 rpm and 354-pound-feet of torque at 6,800 rpm. Best of all, the cars sonorous V-10 will happily spin all the way to a 9,000 rpm redline.
To achieve this level of performance, engineers have beefed up the engine with titanium valves and connecting rods, forged aluminum pistons, a dry sump lubrication system and a titanium Exhaust manifold.
Intensive weight-saving techniques have also been employed, including the use of lightweight carbon-fiber for 65% of the cars body.
Drive is sent to the rear wheels via a six-speed sequential gearbox and a Torsen limited slip differential. Performance should be scintillating, expect 0 to 60 mph times of around 3.7 seconds and a top speed of 201.94 mph.
The end result is an almost perfect 48/52 front-to-rear weight distribution and a final kerb weight of 3,263 pounds, equivalent to a power-to-weight ratio of 5.8 pounds/horsepower.
Other details include six-piston brake calipers with carbon-ceramic discs, titanium mufflers, and 20-inch BBS wheels shod with ZR20 Bridgestone tires--all fitted as standard.
Limited production is the name of the game, with only 500 units planned unless demand proves high enough to support more, though it will cost more than $200,000. Worse still, only 350 of them will be made in left-hand-drive for worldwide consumption. Though this may seem low, remember that a roadster and hybrid variant are also in the works.
Lexus LFA Road and Track Test
The new 2011 Lexus LFA gets tested on the road and on the Nurburgring GP circuit.
I still don't really know what to think about it, it's far too expensive for what it is. It's more expensive than any current production Lamborghini or Ferrari. I think it's a good car but it's not groundbreaking in any way and doesn't really warrant such a big price tag, despite being bespoke and a rare limited edition special. Edmunds say it is capable of a time of 7 minutes and 23 seconds, which softens the price blow slightly, but I can't see it being an immediate success and I can't see 'die hard Lexus fans' wanting one because I don't think they exist. It could be a classic in the future though.

By now you've probably already read our first drive of the 2011 Lexus LFA. It's the Lexus supercar that has finally appeared in the flesh after years of forced hibernation by one Toyota executive after another.
It's quite the impressive piece, and most of those in attendance at today's official unveiling at the 2009 Tokyo Auto Show seemed impressed. Good thing, too, as the new head of Toyota, Akio Toyoda, said during the Toyota press conference that he feels sad about the fact that the company no longer makes exciting cars like the Supra. Yes, he really said he feels sad.

I went for a ride in the 552 HP Lexus LFA with the Master Driver from Lexus behind the wheel. Just listen to the sound of that V10!
I drove it on the same track twice earlier in the day. He made my effort look juvenile.

Third gear and the throttle pedal is nailed to the 2011 Lexus LFA's carbon-fiber bulkhead. The 4.8-liter V10 is rotating 8,000 times per minute and still you don't have to change gear as the 552 horses from Japan are pulling in unison. Now 9,000 rpm and the pistons are traveling at 82 feet per second, so flick the right-side shift paddle and feel the jolt as the automated manual transmission's solitary clutch completes the gearchange.

People say that one of the most amazing things about the LFA is the engine noise, so we've made a video up of the unloading of the LFA into our Park Lane Centre accompanied by 1m 38s of engine revving.
Enjoy.

All New Lexus LFA production version
Price tag: $400,000
The All New Lexus LFA is powered by a bespoke, high-revving 552bhp 4.8-litre naturally aspirated V10 engine, matched to a rear-mounted six-speed sequential automatic transmission, giving 200mph-plus performance.
Keeping the car's weight to an absolute minimum was one of the defining elements in the development of the Lexus LFA and this led to the decision to switch from using aluminium for the car's construction to advanced Carbon Fibre Reinforced Plastic (CFRP) for the chassis and bodywork.
