2013 Buick Encore First Drive
The 2013 Buick Encore crossover delivers Buick's signature style, interior acoustic refinement and luxury amenities in a maneuverable, versatile and efficient package designed to appeal to a new audience of buyers.
With room for five and up to 48.4 cubic feet (1,371 liters) of storage space with the rear seat folded, Encore offers substantial cargo capacity along with its confident, higher driving position, available all-wheel drive and contemporary crossover styling. Buick's exclusive QuietTuning is standard, and features Buick's first use of Bose Active Noise Cancellation technology.
Additional standard features include 10 air bags, StabiliTrak stability enhancement and a 138-horsepower (102 kW) Ecotec 1.4L turbo four-cylinder/six-speed automatic powertrain, along with technologies such as Buick's voice-activated IntelliLink. It uses Bluetooth or a USB to connect the driver's smartphone to a seven-inch, high-resolution, full-color display radio.
The introduction of Encore gives Buick four models with turbocharged four-cylinder engines and six models with EPA-estimated highway fuel economy of 30 mpg or more. It joins Verano -- Buick's third all-new sedan in three years -- to expand the brand's lineup and continue the momentum the Enclave crossover began almost five years ago.

The Encore combines a chiseled exterior design, versatile interior, with tons of technology and premium materials to create a one of a kind vehicle. The 2013 Buick Encore comes in 4 trims: Base, Convenience, Leather, and Premium. You can opt for either a FWD or AWD version. The base price is $24,200 making the Encore a great choice as an entry level luxury crossover SUV.
The compact crossover segment is so hot that Buick has decided to bring this all new model (the Encore) to market. If the Encore looks a little smaller than most crossover you are used to seeing that's because it is. This new compact luxury crossover segment just may catch on. The Encore, like all Buick models, has the big signature grille up front. Buick is no longer at the bottom of the premium barrel, instead it is moving up the ladder. The large bold headlamps and the portholes in the hood are signature Buick cues.
When Buick set out to build the Encore, they did not just want to make another crossover. Instead they wanted a relatively inexpensive crossover to look premium. The exterior hits that mark with the multiple bends in the sheet metal and other styling cues, while the theme is carried over to the interior with the premium materials and tons of technology. There is plenty of room in the Encore for 4 adults and their gear.
The 2013 Buick Encore is powered by a turbocharged 1.4 liter 4-cylinder ECOTEC engine that makes 138 horsepower and 148 lb-ft. of torque. The transmission is a 6-speed manual and you can opt for either FWD or AWD. Fuel economy is excellent with the FWD model netting 25 MPG in the city and 33 MPG on the highway.
From a driver's perspective, the Encore drives very well. Buick has paid a lot of attention to keeping the engine noise and road noise down to a minimum. The Encore feels like a very premium vehicle when you get in it. The Electro-Mechanical steering feels good and is responsive. The interior is very spacious giving the passengers plenty of head room. The soft leather seats and nice dash materials contribute to the overall premium feel which is something you just do not find in a $25k crossover. Buick understands that technology and connectivity is important in this segment. So they made Bluetooth and Rear Vision Camera standard on all trims. But it's the higher trim levels that get the full Infotainment system.
The main competition is the Mini Countryman and the Volkswagen Tiguan. For a starting price of under $25k the 2013 Buick Encore makes a ton of sense for a lot of people.
