350 Olds Diesel, No Start (Fail)
The Cadillac isn't getting fuel for some reason. We thought the glow plugs were burned out, but if that was the case this would have allowed the engine to start. I later observed that while cranking we were not getting any unburnt fuel out the tail pipe. Hm...
Driving in the Olds Diesel
Several people have asked to see more videos driving the Olds Diesel. This is a cold start in the morning (it was about 40 last night, probably 50 in the garage), followed by a cruise around the neighborhood. Turn down your subwoofer - camera picked up some low rumbles that you don't hear while driving...
Olds 5.7 Diesel First Start
First start after taking an engine that sat in a field (in a car) for 17 years and was seized. Pistons were machined to drop the compression ratio to 18:1, piston rings un-seized from the pistons and reassembled using new head gaskets and ARP head bolts. Almost all parts with the exception of seals and rocker arms were reused. The rocker arms ate away at the tip of the valves and had no other option than replacement. The valve stems were ground back to flat using a 2" sanding disc.
The injection pump was disassembled to remove a deteriorated governor ring and the governor assembly was welded solid (the ring only serves to reduce vibration in the assembly and therefore a smoother idle). The injectors were taken apart, cleaned and pop tested (a couple were seized). They were then set to pop at 2300 psi, instead of the factory 1800, and tested for excessive leaking.
The engine initially ran rough, but on subsequent fires has continued to smooth out. The engine will receive a super charger from a 3.8 Buick and ultimately be put to duty in the 24 Hours of Lemons. What could go wrong?
stanadyne diesel Injection pump info
The information that i have learned though books, and by visually seeing the insides of a Stanadyne/Roosa Master DB-2 Injection pump. The one in the video is out of a 1979 Oldsmobile 5.7l v-8 diesel engine.
5.7 diesel project update
Bottom end fully assembled, front end fully assembled, heads and being done right now, after that is final assembly and start up.
Turbo "S71" Olds Engine Build Video BTR Performance Part 4 V8TV
http://www.v8tvshow.com/enginedvd - This is the fourth in a multi-part series covering the custom 422 cubic-inch stroker engine build performed by master engine builder Bill Trovato at BTR Performance for our turbocharged 1971 Olds project called the "S71". In this installment, Trovato installs the piston rings on the pistons and installs the pistons and rods on the crankshaft. Although this video series features and Olds engine, the valuable, race-proven techniques shown by Trovato apply to any performance engine build.
1978 K20 chevy truck with a newly rebuilt 5.7 oldsmobile diesel. The front grille and lights come from a 1980 model. This engine is the 1st generation D block made from 1978-1980.This engine has several thousand dollars invested into it and it runs perfectly.
A year or so after the engine was rebuilt, one of the reconditioned cylinder heads developed a crack so I had to take the head off as the engine was emitting white smoke on the driver side.I had another D3 cylinder head on standby so the videos you see were taken place with the replacement D3 head already installed.Everything in this engine is new internally.New old stock pencil injectors and injection pump were also installed. The truck has a TH400 with a BOP adapter plate. It has energy suspension polyurethane bushings found throughout. It's also equipped with a Lucas CAV water separator. Many people bad mouth the 5.7 diesel but in my opinion they perform just fine if maintained well and are driven with common sense. This engine fires up every time when needed.Absolutely no problems.
I also added the 6.2 diesel electronic glow plug controller but I still retained the acdelco 8G fast glow plugs the olds diesel used back in the early 80's.
Performance aluminum under-drive pulleys were also installed.I added new chrome valve covers along with a chrome differential cover but they look a little dirty in the video.
I also have another 5.7 diesel. It's a 1981 DX block, punched .030 oversize and is installed in a '93 chevy K1500 pickup.I will take a video of that particular engine in the near future.
