This video is taking place right after a recent lifter rebuild. Followup to the mystery top end ticking in my 300zx TT. The first idea of a collapsed lifter are now eliminated (just rebuilt them, and no change). There is no noise on cold startup, the Z runs perfectly, then as the engine warms up, the noise escalates. At certain RPM, there is no noise, but it is a very small window. The car runs fine, just this noise is very disconcerting and I would really like to find it! I ran this setup for 5000+ Miles on the new built engine, and this noise suddenly came after doing a pull up to about 6500rpm.
- JWT 500 Cams/ JWT HD Valve springs
- BDE VTC sprockets
- Eagle Rods, Wiseco Pistons
- Setup Tuned for safe power
Everything has been checked that has been suspicious so far. Lifters, Compression is good, Spark, Fuel injectors, Timing is dead on, even VTC solenoids!. I have no clue what this could be at this point, retainers looked good under lifters as well.
Nissan Z32 Top End Knocking Diagnosis
Discovered a top end noise after startup. (More)...
This video was taken after removing the clutch fan (Don't worry it's usually on the engine, ran it for a short time)
Thinking this could be a lifter, retainer, or worse. Seems to be around cylinder 4
1994 Nissan 300zx Engine Noise /Knocking (fixed)
1994 Nissan 300zx 2+2 N/A Engine noise/Engine knocking. I started to hear it one day after work.
So far I have searched and asked a few people, getting mixed reviews.
Put in Lucas Heavy Duty Oil Stabilizer - Did nothing
Changed the oil - No change
Did a compression test in each valve - All stated at the same pressure
Replaced spark plugs - No change (the ones I replaced seemed like they didn't burn)
I am currently stuck :|
Found out the timing belt was way off and the auto Tensioner was not working properly.
The belt was fine so we just reused it.
Cleaned the auto Tensioner and re-positioned the valves, put it it back and it ran smooth.
Leaving this video to others. Maybe someone had a problem and at least this could be a start.
1997 Pontiac Bonneville, pushing 200,000 miles. Today, I noticed the A/C compressor making a rattling noise at idle. The engine runs fine and the air conditioning is still ice-cold, so whatever this is, hopefully I caught it early.
I originally thought that my tensioner was the culprit, so pardon the extra screen time it gets.
300zx knock after changing intake cam gears
well a little better quality, same damn noise! Ordering BDE VTC sprocket set from CZP tomorrow, hopefully that fixes the problem...if not it's all new lifters :(
The engine cuts out because the engine management could tell we had a few things unplugged so it killed the ignition.
WHY WON'T YOU JUST RUN!!
300ZX Twin Turbo VTC Noise
Variable cam timing sprocket noise common with TTZ32's. This noise is different from common lifter tick. Make sure it is this noise before you spend $500 to replace the gears. There is a sheathed connector for each cam on each cylinder bank.

First start up of Old Motor in new Z32
Swapped the NA VG30 out of my white car, which has 233k miles on it, into the new car due to the new car leaking oil from the VTC solenoids.
Just wired it up and decide to fire her up. Started up with ZERO issues on the fist try. Old reliable has earned that name

Ticking fuel injector???
I just did a m50 manifold swap on my 98 BMW 328i and at first I thought I misplaced some spacers on fuel rail but once car has been warmed up and I turn it off then back on, it starts up with this ticking. Any thoughts?
