Up Close: Shifting an 18 Speed Transmission
Normally, you wouldn't shift through all the gears in a big rig unless under extreme conditions. Shifting a truck unladen is far different from shifting a truck under max capacity going up a steep grade.
Automated MAN TipMatic gearshift system
The MAN TipMatic gearshift system automatically selects and engages the right gear, relieving the driver of this task. There is no clutch pedal. In automatic mode, the gears are selected automatically. If the driver wishes to correct a gearshift, the system remains in manual mode for 10 seconds, then returns to automatic. On difficult terrain, the driver switches to manual and selects the gears in advance. The gearshift itself is always automatic. The moving-off gear is selected either manually or according to the load, depending on the vehicle version and type of rotary control. Engines with power ratings of up to 480 hp can be combined with the direct drive version of the TipMatic gearbox.
The TipMatic system improves vehicle economy through reduced fuel consumption, lower service costs and a payload increase of approx. 70 kg, when compared with a comparable manual gearbox.
If required, the MAN TipMatic can be combined with the MAN EasyStart hill holder, which greatly facilitates moving off on hills and therefore makes this manoeuvre safer.

24V71 Detroit
This is our 24 cylinder Detroit that we are putting in a custom 359 Peterbilt. It will use an Allison Transmission, and the engine will be in the front of the truck. We are starting off with 40 foot 4" X 14" rectangle rails, not sure how long it will end up being.

It is a 16 speed with overdrive.
The 16 speed is similar to the 14 speed which is much more common, except the air-shift pattern is different.
The first 3 gears in the main box ( controlled with the gearstick ) each have 4 gears on the air shift ( the blue control on the gearstick ). This gives 12 gears.
The top 2 gears on the stick you only use 2 airshift positions , like on a 13 or 18 speed RoadRanger , so this gives 16 gears in total.
A compound shift is changing gears with the air-shift and main gearbox at the same time.
You don't need to use the clutch except when starting and when using the airshift in 1st gear in the main box.
All this info is easy for truck drivers who can operate a Road Ranger , which is the most common transmission in Australia. But it is a harder box to use than a Road Ranger.
