Rebuilding Axle Shafts On Toyota 7.5 Inch Rear End

This is what I went through in rebuilding the axle shafts on my 89 Toyota Pickup's axle shafts. It's a 7.5 inch axle. I had to replace the differential carrier (which I don't cover rebuilding) and decided to do the bearings while I was there, since they had 295K not-so-friendly miles on them. The key to all this was borrowing my Dad's press, wouldn't have been able to do this without it because of the fits. Simple heat and hammering wasn't budging anything.

How to remove a bolt in axle shaft WITHOUT any special tools---Do it yourself
Heres a short tutorial on how to remove a bolt in axle shaft from a rear end without the need of a slide hammer or any kind of special pullers. The rear end shown in this video is a DANA 35 in a Jeep Cherokee. Ford 9 inch rearends are similar. PLEASE NOTE*** If your axle flange DOESNT have the access hole to remove the bolts as shown in this video...The rearend is likely a C Clip rearend and this method WILL NOT work, and the diff cover will need to be removed to access the C clips.

Disassembly of 1998 Ford Ranger 8.8" Rear Differential. Replacement of rear bearings was required including pinion and carrier bearings. This is an overview of the process. Some steps may not be shown or shown in part. Refer to a shop manual for detailed instructions. I am not a mechanic but I do have a lot of experience with vehicle mechanical work and have had substantial coaching from my brother who is a mechanic. How to Remove & Replace a Toyota 4x4 Manual Locking Hub
How to remove and replace a Toyota Manual Locking hub. This video shows how I pull the manual locking hub off a Toyota 4x4 truck. The video shows my technique for dealing with the cone washers that can be quite stubborn sometimes. Toyota used the exact same hubs from 1979 - 1985 trucks ( Hilux ) and 4Runners with only minor changes from 1986 - present.

Toyota 4x4 brake modification makes broken Birfield access much quicker! Quick release caliper.
Toyota for some reason made the mount for the brake caliper hardline a trapped unit. Because of the way it was designed you have to disconnect the brake line if you want to remove the caliper from the steering knuckle, or if you want to remove the knuckle from the axle. Even under shop conditions I hate bleeding brakes, so imagine how much fun it is if you would have to open the brake lines out on the trail (like when you're fixing a blown Birfield joint.) Spilling brake fluid on the ground out in the woods is not cool either. This mod allows you to remove the caliper while the brake hard line and flexible line are still attached. If you don't have to open the system, you don't have to bleed after you put it back together. This mod alos comes in super handy in the shop. As you can eliminate the brake bleeding step in any job that requires that you remove the caliper (Wheel bearing adjustment, rotor replacement, steering knuckle removal, etc.) If you don't have to bleed the brakes you just saved yourself a bunch of time. If you've had to disconnect the brake hard line at the caliper, his trick also makes getting that tiny brake hard line fitting that mounts under the bracket started into the soft line fitting threads a breeze. This is the first mod that I do to any Solid Front Axle (SFA) Toyota that wanders into my life. It's such an easy mod I'm just dumbfounded that Toyota didn't make the brackets like this from the get-go. Maybe it was a planned move to increase the service time...increased service time = more money in the service department's pocket...

Installing Wheel Spacers for Toyota 4x4 Solid Front Axle. The pros and cons of using wheel spacers.
How to install wheel spacers on a Toyota 4x4. My thoughts on using wheel spacers, some of the pros and cons of using wheel spacers, and some of the tricks I've learned in dealing with wheel spacers over the years. Generally, I'm a fan of wheel spacers. The biggest thing is just to realize that you've deviated from the factory tolerances and that parts (like wheel bearings) are going to wear faster from strain that falls outside the design parameters. but, if you're running tires big enough to need wheel spacers, you probably know that already. I say it in the video, but I can't say it enough: Check those nuts that hold the spacer on often. Wheeling rigs have a freakish ability to loosen everything attached to them.

1996 RL Rear Wheel Bearing Replacement -EricTheCarGuy
Visit me at: http://www.ericthecarguy.com/ I get lots of requests to just do straight up repair videos like this all the time and I'm always happy when I can oblige. This wheel bearing replacement is fairly typical for a FWD vehicle so much of what you see here can be applied to other FWD vehicles. There are variations in the way the bearing attaches to the hub however the principals are pretty much the same. You should not need a press to do this, just some basic hand tools and sockets will do, air tools make it easier but you don't need them to get this done. As you can see in the video I ran into trouble but the method I employed can be used if you find yourself in a similar situation.
