Infiniti FX. At first glance, Infinitis well-regarded FX crossover appears more sports sedan than SUV, but its actually an artful blending of both. First introduced in 2003, the shapely FX45, and its V6-powered sibling the FX35, still have what it takes to stop traffic and turn heads. The flashy design, however, sometimes places form over function, most noticeably in the areas of cargo space and rear visibility. If you can live with these minor shortcomings, the Infiniti FXs impressive handling, distinctive good looks and adrenaline-pumping acceleration make it a desirable performance-oriented crossover.

Described by its designer as a Bionic Cheetah, the curvaceous FX indeed looked like a predator about to pounce, and it was the competition from Lexus and BMW that was its prey. For 2009, Infiniti has remade its revolutionary FX, keeping the familiar silhouette but dramatically altering its face. Infiniti EX35. With every manufacturer vying for supremacy in the crossover category, Infiniti has done something interesting. Nissans luxury division has created its own category. Yes, technically the EX35 is a crossover but the term carries baggage that the small Infiniti does not. Its body is free of the faux ruggedness of early crossovers, and its ride and handling are close to that of a proper sports sedan. If we were tasked with categorizing the EX35 we might call it a tall sport wagon. But perhaps it is best to forget categories altogether and just appreciate the EX35 for what it is: a sleek, sporty, technological tour de force.

2009 Mercedes-Benz M-Class. The M-Class is Mercedes-Benzs contender in the growing mid-size luxury SUV arena, battling such heavyweights as the Lexus RX 350, BMW X5 and Infiniti FX. Unlike the original M, which rode on a truck-like body-on-frame architecture, the newest M-Class is closer in design to a very tall passenger car. The unit body gives the M-Class greater structural rigidity, and allows for better ride and handling via a fully independent suspension.
