Striking saloon on sale in Korea with export sales later in 2012
First modern rear-wheel drive Kia has V6 power plus 8-speed transmission
Kia's all-new luxury flagship saloon, the K9, has gone on sale in Korea, introducing Kia to an entirely new segment of the global automotive market. The striking new rear-wheel drive will be launched in a number of key overseas markets starting in the fourth quarter of 2012.
With a 5,090 mm overall length and 3,045 mm wheelbase, K9 offers generous front and rear occupant space. Overall width and height are 1,900 mm and 1,490 mm, respectively, which creates a spacious cabin environment.
Initially, K9 will be available in some overseas markets powered by an upgraded 290 ps Lambda V6 3.8-litre MPI engine, with a 334 ps 3.8-litre GDI engine joining the global engine line-up next year.
The all-new saloon will premiere a range of advanced luxury features and technologies, including fully adaptive all-LED headlamps, Lane Departure Warning System (LDWS), radar-based Blind-Spot Detection (BSD), a 17-speaker Lexicon (by Harman) sound system, Smart Cruise Control (SCC) and an Around-View Monitor (AVM) with four cameras.
Every K9 comes with Kia's all-new eight-speed automatic transmission. The wide spread of gear ratios guarantees brisk acceleration and high-speed refinement, while shift-by-wire (SBW) technology with a joystick control delivers fast, smooth gear changes.
"K9 is all about elegant simplicity, balanced proportions and simple surfaces," says Kia's Chief Design Officer, Peter Schreyer. "The class-leading long wheelbase, the prestige distance, large wheels, sharply upright short overhangs and a long sweeping shoulder line all work together in a harmony to give K9 a sporty, athletic proportion and a confident stance quintessential to a premium large rear-wheel drive vehicle."
"K9 is a clear signal of our intention and determination to compete head-to-head with the European luxury brands. And for Kia, our customers, and for me -- this car is like a dream come true," concludes Schreyer.
Currently there are no plans to bring the K9 to the UK.

그랜저의 유일한 맞수, 기아 K7 3.3 GDI
자동차시장의 베스트셀러는 그 나라의 소득 수준을 반영하는 경향이 짙다. 80년대 소형차에서 90년대 초 준중형차, 90년대 중반의 중형차로 넘어오면서 우리나라의 베스트셀러는 꾸준히 상향 조정됐다. 그러나 가격에 따른 소비성향이 비탄력적인 자동차시장의 특성상 소비 패턴이 하루아침에 달라지지는 않는다.
그런데 올해 초부터 눈에 띄는 변화가 있었다. 현대 그랜저가 전체 내수시장에서 1위를 차지하는 경우가 늘어났던 것. 사회 초년생도 쏘나타를 척척 구입하는 상황에서 그랜저의 베스트셀러 등극은 이상할 것도 없었다.
현재 국산차 중 준대형급시장에서 격돌하는 모델은 모두 4종. 이들 차종 모두 신 모델이 나온 지 2년이 채 안된 따끈한 신차들이다. 오늘 시승하는 기아 K7 3.3 GDI는 기아차의 라인업에서 사실상 플래그십 역할을 하는 최고급차다. 위에 오피러스가 있긴 하지만, 이미 수출용은 단종이 됐고 내년이면 후속 모델 K9으로 대체가 예정돼 있기 때문이다.
3.3 모델은 외관상 큰 변화는 없다. 이미 지난 2월 2.4, 3.0 GDI 발표 당시 내외관에 한 차례 변화를 줬기 때문. 초창기 모델에 비하면 라디에이터 그릴의 변화가 눈에 띈다. 가로형과 세로형으로 모델별로 차별화를 줬던 방식을 버리고, 메시 타입 그릴로 통일해 한결 깔끔해졌다.
K7의 디자인은 완성도 면에서 높은 점수를 줄 수 있다. 동급의 그랜저가 화려함을 앞세운 나머지 다소 오버스러운 느낌이 있는 반면, K7은 간결하게 다듬어진 라인으로 아름다움을 살리고 있다.
K7은 디자인에서 큰 흠을 잡기 어렵지만, 다소 아쉬운 디자인의 엠블럼이 점수를 깎아 먹는다. BMW나 메르세데스 벤츠처럼 메이커의 이미지를 형상화한 멋진 엠블럼이 항상 아쉽다는 생각이다. 현대차만 하더라도 옆으로 누운 'H' 마크가 잘 어울리는데, 기아차는 'KIA'라는 이름을 그대로 나열한 것이 단순하고 아쉽다는 평가다.
3.3 직분사 엔진은 현대 제네시스에 먼저 얹힌 것으로, 그랜저와 K7에 적용되면서 출력이 300마력에서 294마력으로 낮아졌다. 전륜구동(앞바퀴굴림) 방식으로서는 이 정도면 충분한 수준이고, 동급 배기량의 수입차에 견줘서도 밀리지 않는다.
배기량을 낮추면 아무래도 연비를 높이는 데 유리하다. 이 차 역시 리터당 10.9km/ℓ로 동급 최고 수준의 연비를 보여준다. 시승 도중 점검해보니, 시가지 위주로 달렸을 경우 7.0~7.5km/ℓ 기록했다. 놀라운 건 고속도로 정속 주행 때였다. '에코' 모드로 평균 시속 100km 정도로 정속 주행을 했더니 평균 연비가 11.9km/ℓ까지 나왔다. 3.3ℓ의 대 배기량을 감안하면 상당히 우수한 수치다.
엔진과 변속기의 괜찮은 궁합에도 불구하고 아쉬움이 드는 것은 서스펜션 세팅 때문이다. 초기 모델의 딱딱함은 부드럽게 정제했으나, 3.3 모델에 장착된다는 소문이 있었던 전자제어식 서스펜션(ECS)이 빠져 있다. 이 때문에 기호에 맞는 승차감과 핸들링을 완성하는 데 한계가 있다. 독일 명차들과 맞서기 위해서는 이런 장비가 필요하다는 생각이다.
K7은 초창기의 시행착오를 겪은 후 완성도 높은 모습으로 탄생했다. 그랜저와의 판매량 차이가 많이 벌어져 있기는 하지만, 그 정도 차이가 날 정도로 상품성에서 차이가 나는 차는 결코 아니다. 이번 시승은 동급 최강의 경쟁력을 갖춘 그랜저에 맞설 차는 기아 K7밖에 없다는 걸 확인해줬다.
