The Ford Fiesta is now the first car in it's segment to earn top crash test ratings in each of the world's largest auto markets that perform safety testing, the U.S., China and Europe. Ford Fiesta adds five-star safety rating in China to similar top ratings in Europe and Australia/New Zealand.
► 2012 Volvo C30 Electric - CRASH TEST
At the Detroit Auto Show 2011 Volvo Cars is spotlighting the important issue of electric car safety in an unusual, but distinctive way. On the company's stand there is a Volvo C30 Electric that has undergone a frontal collision test at 40 mph (64 km/h). "Our tests show it is vital to separate the batteries from the electric car's crumple zones to make it as safe as a conventional car. In Detroit we are the first car maker to show the world what a truly safe electric car looks like after a collision with high-speed impact," says Volvo Cars' President and CEO Stefan Jacoby.

When large, truck-based SUVs collide with passenger cars or minivans, the results can be devastating for the occupants of the latter.
But fatalities in such accidents are on the decrease in the United States thanks to measures employed by automakers. Traffic deaths are down 64 percent since the year 2000 due to changes in automobile design such as lower bumpers for SUVs and better-protect cabin cells for passenger cars.
In 2000, the death rate for car and minivan passengers in collisions with trucks or SUVs was 44 deaths per million. That came down to 16 deaths per million by 2009.
The study was conducted by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, a private-sector group based in Arlington, Virginia.
"By working together, the automakers got life-saving changes done quickly," said Joe Nolan, the institute's chief administrative officer.

FRONTAL OFFSET TEST
OVERALL EVALUATION:

Important: Frontal crash test ratings can be compared only among vehicles of similar weight.
Good Acceptable Marginal Poor
Test details:
The Hyundai Accent was redesigned for the 2012 model year.
Restraints/dummy kinematics — Dummy movement was well controlled. The driver side curtain and side torso airbags deployed during the crash. During rebound, the dummy's head contacted the side curtain airbag and the top of the A-pillar.
Injury measures — Measures taken from the dummy indicate a low risk of any significant injuries in a crash of this severity. Head acceleration from the A-pillar hit was low.

Volvos crash-test laboratory now 10 years new
We are continuously taking new steps towards our vision that nobody should die or suffer serious injuries in a new Volvo car by the year 2020.

At Volvo, the ability to replicate road accidents contributes to world-class crash safety.
Volvo's crash-test laboratory in Torslanda turns 10 this year - and the almost 3,000 full-scale tests that have been carried out during the high-tech facility's first decade have helped give Volvo owners some of the safest cars.
"We can replicate most of the incident and accident scenarios that take place out on the roads. By analyzing these and then testing new safety technology in the crash-test laboratory, we can improve the safety level in our cars so that they become even safer in real-life traffic conditions," says Thomas Broberg, Senior Safety Advisor at Volvo.
When the new safety center was inaugurated by Sweden's King Carl XVI Gustaf in early 2000, it was one of the most advanced in the car industry - a position it has retained over the years thanks to the continuous implementation of new equipment and new test methods.
The latest technology infusion is in the form of a set of digital high-speed cameras that can take 200,000 frames per second.
