MAHLE Downsized Engine: 3D Animation
The 1.2-liter unit, a three-cylinder gasoline engine, can appropriately power a mid-class passenger car with a power output per liter of up to 120 kilowatts (163 hp). Compared to typical gasoline engines in this vehicle class, this is a downsizing by half—with up to 30 percent less fuel consumption.
The technology demonstrator uses cutting-edge technology: forged pistons, two overhead composite camshafts with double camshaft adjustment, four valves per cylinder, direct injection, air-water charge air cooling, cooled Exhaust gas recirculation, and cooled lightweight valves. A further technical highlight is the completely integrated intake module, in which the air filter, charge air cooling, noise suppression, three individual throttle flaps, and introduction of Exhaust gas recirculation are accommodated. To consistently minimize fuel consumption, frictional loss was also drastically reduced: with the use of innovative coatings on piston pins, piston rings, and cylinder running surfaces.

New Mercedes Benz V8 biturbo engine
http://www.eurocarnews.com - Mercedes Benz AG - In the new V8, Mercedes-Benz engineers achieved a high output from a lower displacement primarily by using one turbocharger for each bank of cylinders. The intake air is forced into the eight combustion chambers at an overpressure of up to 0.9 bar, with the turbine blades rotating at up to 190,000 rpm. The turbochargers and their hot gas ducting are accommodated on the outsides of the cylinder heads. This enables the Intercooler module with its air/water Intercooler and charge-air distributor to be located inside the V of the engine -- a solution which Mercedes-Benz engineers found to be advantageous following a long series of tests. This is confirmed by the output and fuel consumption figures achieved in practice.
The Mercedes-Benz engine designers configured the turbochargers to provide high torque even at low engine speeds. Compared to the previous engine, the result is an increase in torque at 2000 rpm by more than 45 percent. An outstanding 700 Nm is available between 1600 and 4750 rpm. The driver therefore perceives no turbo lag, but experiences the same pleasant and effortless performance from the new V8 as that delivered by a mighty, naturally aspirated 7-litre engine.
The engine is based on a diecast aluminium crankcase with aluminium/silicon cylinder liners. The developers adopted the basic and connecting rod journal diameters from the preceding engine, while raising the piston compression height for load reasons by just about 4 millimetres. By reducing the lift and shortening the connecting rod by two millimetres, it was possible to retain the interior height of the crankcase. Showing the high efficiency of the turbocharged V8, which is configured for premium petrol (RON 95), the compression ratio of 10.5:1 remains unchanged versus the naturally aspirated preceding engine.
