VW 1.2L TDI Powered Honda Insight with Hybrid Functionality
Prior to our trip down to Bonneville for the 2009 World of Speed the Insight 1G got fully hybrid functionality courtesy of an Arduino microcontroller and some programming help from Eric Smith. For those familiar with the way the 2000-2006 Honda Insight works this short video should look familiar. Additional optimization needs to be done to get the most from the Diesel Hybrid concept but we've managed to put the major system compatibility items to bed. Note: this is the world's fastest diesel Insight at 97.7 mph in the standing mile.

01 - Oil change - CO vent, Jack stands, Rhino ramps
UPDATE, 4/30/13: To protect concrete from the floor jack wheels, put down some cardboard - use a broken up box, or a pizza box, it might not be a bad idea to do that under the jack stands also, instead of using plywood

This CO vent is made of ... 1-1/2" x 2' ABS pipe, it fits pretty closely around the tailpipe, I held a CO detector around it for 3 minutes with the garage door only open a foot, and it didn't go off. Cut pipe at a 45 degree angle, give it a twist to get a better fit around the top of the tailpipe. Melting point of ABS is 221 F (CPVC is 175 F), infra-red thermometer on the tailpipe read 112 - 136 F ... 1-1/2" to 3" ABS pipe converter (glued onto the pipe) ... aluminum elbow that goes 22.5, 45, and 90 degrees, it's set at 45 degrees ... 4" x 20' flexible foil dryer vent ... 4" worm gear clamps (2) ... There are two support systems in place (use a floor jack to get it like this, I have a 3 ton Craftsman) ... The jack stands take most of the load (not raised up on any notch) and Rhino ramps (12" wide) act as backup ... The idea of having wood under the jack stands (3/4" x 12" x 12" white board / pine shown here) is to distribute the load, and to save the concrete from stress (pitting down the road), while also helping to reduce vibration from the engine ... I will be using 3/4" x 12" x 12" oak plywood next time, pine is relatively soft, and solid wood might split, the fibers of plywood run crosswise, so it's stronger ... The Honda Insight weighs about 1,887 lbs, or .84 tons ... Run the engine for 3 minutes to heat the oil for doing an oil change, and then later for 3 minutes to check for leaks (then put the shrouds back on)... Remove the jack stands, reverse the Rhinos, set the car on them, and then back the car down ... I replaced all of the rusted out fasteners securing the shroud with stainless steel M6 16 mm nuts, bolts, and fender washers, so now they're easy to remove. There were 12 fasteners, but I reduced it to 10. There are also two clips. Objective is to reduce the number of times you have to raise and lower the car ... I just have to make sure the emergency brake is on, and it's in neutral *before* I start the engine, and take my foot off of the clutch and brake ... This seems safe.
10/2/09 Added safety measure: The Rhinos are designed to have the tires sink into them a bit, to prevent rolling, but, put a second pair of wheel chocks on the other side of the rear tires next time, in case the car rolls forward.
10/6/09 Additional: With the garage door open, and holding the CO detector near the Exhaust pipe - I had the CO vent on (for 3 mins, to warm the oil before an oil change), and then off (for 3 mins, while looking for oil leaks). The CO detector did not go off either time - but I did notice unpleasant Exhaust fumes in the garage with it off (none noticed with it on) - so I think it's a good idea to use the CO vent.

In this video, I drive my '06 Honda Insight MT/with MIMA from my hometown of Evansville, IN to the HybridFest car show in Madison, WI. I had some battery recalibration issues along the way, but still managed 100.3 MPG for the trip. Let me repeat that, I drove from Evansville, IN to Madison, WI using LESS THAN 5 GALLONS OF GAS!
