Japans Mitsubishi Motors has just unveiled its new i-MiEV electric car. The vehicle is priced at just over 47,000 U.S. dollars, less than other rival electric cars but still a hefty price compared to popular hybrid combined gas-electric vehicles.
Plug it in, charge it up and drive it away. The new age of EVs, or electric vehicles, has come along and Japan's Mitsubishi Motors hopes the new I-MiEV will energize the otherwise slow electric car business.
Mass production has already begun with over 2,000 on order. With Mitsubishi Motors' president saying output will hit 30,000 over the next few years.
The president is also sending a strong message that electric cars are not only more economic to run, but also have less effects on the environment.
[Osamu Masuko, President, Mistubishi Motors]:
"We believe that EVs are the ultimate solution to atmospheric pollution, global warming and the end of oil. Introducing the 100 percent - electric i-MiEV onto the market will both test the pinnacle of current technology and lead the way to a new era."
The I-MiEV, which gets 160 kilometers on a 30-minute quick charge, will be sold at about $47,600 U.S. dollars.
The I-MiEV takes about seven hours to charge on a 200-volt outlet, and will soon be ready to roll onto roads in both Japan and abroad.

First Car Running on Compressed Air
Emitting only a breeze of fresh air might seem like a dream, but it's the latest invention by French engineer Guy Negre. He estimates the new vehicle will cost about 4,000 Euros and travel a maximum speed of about 93 miles per hour.
As a former Formula one motor racing engineer, Negre strongly believes he is introducing the car of the future to the market — he's hoping by the beginning of 2010. According to Negre, his engine is twice as efficient as regular cars, using up to 60 percent of its capacity, and offers a zero-pollution vehicle suitable for urban driving.

[Guy Negre, French Inventor & Engineer]:
"Some experts say there are 400 thousand deaths in Europe, due to traffic pollution. So our ways with cars in cities will have to change completely, so we will need clean cars, I think one day or another, polluting cars will be banned from cities, which means there will be only electric cars left, and ours."
The car's engine will move the pistons using pressurized air. The engine, topped by an electric motor, emits only fresh air out of an almost frozen Exhaust pipe. Some experts, however, are skeptical.
[Daniel Favrat, Industrial Science Expert]:
"The major challenge is that pressurized air has a very weak energetic capacity. If you take a small car with 40 liters of capacity with normal fuel, that equals, with air pressurized at 300 bars, only two deciliters of petrol. So you see the extraordinary challenge to produce such vehicles. That's why I'm personally a little skeptical."
In its current design, Favrat argues, the car does not meet modern security standards, which require heavy materials.
Japanese Company Invents Water Fueled Car
Tired of pumping expensive gasoline into your car? Well one Japanese company reveals an eco-friendly car that runs on water, using the company's generating system, which converts water into electrical power - possibly the world's first.

STORY:
All you need is a liter of water - any kind of water to be exact, whether its river, rain, sea water, or even Japanese tea.
Genepax unveiled a car that runs on water in the western Japanese city of Osaka. They say it's an electric powered car that runs solely on hydrogen dioxide.
[Kiyoshi Hirasawa, Genepax CEO]:
"The main characteristic of this car is that no external input is needed. The car will continue to run as long as you have a bottle of water inside for you to add from time to time."
According to Japanese broadcaster TV Tokyo, once the water is poured into a water tank at the back of the car, the newly invented energy generator takes out the hydrogen from the water, releases electrons and finally generates electrical power.
[Kiyoshi Hirasawa, Genepax CEO]:
"We highly recommend our system since it does not require you to build up an infrastructure to recharge your batteries, which is usually the case for most electric cars."
According to the Genepax, 1 liter of water keeps the car running for about an hour with a speed of 80 kilometers or 50 miles an hour.
The company has just applied for a patent and is hoping to collaborate with Japanese automobile manufacturers to mass manufacture their invention in the very near future.
Indian Builds Affordable Compact Car
India is the home to one of the world's smallest and cheapest consumer cars: the Tata Nano. But now one mechanic has built an even more compact car at his workshop in southern India. He was inspired by the lack of road space and the ever-increasing cost of living.

The owner of this Bangalore mechanical workshop has built an affordable compact car.
The lack of parking space and the increasing cost of living were the main inspiration for Narsimha Raju, who built the two-seater car for those on a low budget.
[Narsimha Raju, Compact Car Builder]:
"As you know in our society, we don't get proper space to park our cars or even moving on road, there is no space. Because of this congested life everybody, I thought why should I not do a compact car, which is suitable to everyday, cost wise and space wise. And that was the inspiration."
Raju's affordable car is on the same budget as a two-wheeler but with added protection.
[Narsimha Raju, Compact Car Builder]:
"The car is mainly suitable to an ordinary person who can afford a two wheeler."
Once officially approved, his car will be on sale for around 1,700 U.S dollars.
The helmet shaped car has upward opening doors, weighs around 150 kilograms and has a four-stroke petrol engine of 175 cc.
It can cover 35 kilometres per litre with the highest speed of 80 kilometers.
New Electric Cars Are Better
Just showing off some of the cool new electric cars and putting to rest some of the myths out there. When people think of electric cars, typically they think of older ugly slower models, lead-acid batterys, and BS propaganda they've read slamming the "electric cars"(as though they all carried the exact same attributes)
The battery technology has changed(and will change even more when nanowire battery becomes common), the speeds have changed, the climate versatility has changed, the prices are changing, the car companies are changing... everything is changing for the better. I expect to see a lot more support for EV's during and after 2010.
