I've always liked this tool for this exact kind of repair as it makes it very easy to verify the operation of a 12v component with just the push of a button and now with the addition of the volt meter it's even better. I know the 'beeping' can get annoying but you can turn it off when you want but it's nice when you're working by yourself and are trying to verify a signal, listen for the noise and you're good. Fixing defrost dial on a 2003 Cavalier. (tension in dial, snaps back) No tools needed!
The control knob was hard to turn and then snapped back to the center of the dial once letting go. Holding the knob in place on defrost didn't change the air flow from standard AC vents. My floor vents and front defrost were completely inoperable. I decided to film this after seeing that many people online were having this problem (http://www.carcomplaints.com/Chevrolet/Cavalier/2003/AC_heater/HVAC_controls_stuck.shtml) but nobody had a tutorial to fix it. A few people talked about removing the dash, but I was able to figure it out without removing it. I'm not a mechanic, and don't really know the names of all the parts, but I'm somewhat mechanically inclined and was able to figure it out from scratch in about 20 minutes. I hope this helps someone. (good karma for me!) I apologize for the camera work. I filmed this at night right after fixing my defrost. It had just snowed and I knew I had to get this fixed before winter was in full swing. The area is really tight and hard to maneuver a camera, so I have some bad angles, but I tried to clarify as much as possible... Also I apologize for my boring voice in the narration.
