General Motors PASSLOCK® anti-deterrent features in a 99 Pontiac Grand Am 2.4L
So, once again GM has done it. They invented something that failed and yet again they don't have a solution. This feature should not be added to any car, even if someone steals the car, the odds of this system to stop working are zero to none. Once WE THE OWNERS need to replace an ignition cylinder or an ECM, then the system fails for us. And the Dealership has NO CLUE how to fix it other than the helpful tip to crack the ECM open and replace the "memory chip". We all know that the memory chip is integrated and soldered on these years models. There is a reason why I love FORD!

Automotive Robo Tech was called to a 2002 Pontiac Grand Am, with a 3.8 liter engine. The tech said that as he was driving, the "SECURITY" light came on. There did not seem to be any effect on driving. After the road test, he re-started the car without any problems, and the security light was not on. Later on, he started the car again, it ran for a couple of seconds, and then stopped, with the SECURITY light flashing. The car then would not re-start anymore, and the SECURITY light remained on.
The information database said regarding the security Passlock, after attempting to re-start the engine, if the SECURITY light flashes or stays on, wait ten minutes with the key in ON until the light goes off. Then, turn the ignition to the OFF position before attempting to start the engine again.
This information worked, and the vehicle started. Unfortunately, a few weeks later, the tech said he had to go through the same procedure to get the customer's car started. At this time, the customer said he wanted the Passlock bypassed, and not repaired.
Well, I am Robo Tech and don't really get involved with Jerry rigging automobiles. It is beneath my intellect! So, I decided to call in my cousin, Roby Martin, an expert at nothing, axcept cutting wires.
Hello, I am Roby Martin. Follow me on this one, as we perform a high class GM Passlock bypass. It turns out that, the most common culprit for Passlock faults is a Security module in the ..... Get the whole story now!.... See what happened next in this video right now!....

Cutting White Wire on Saturn Ion to Fix Starting Issue
This is me showing how I cut the passlock wire on my car. My car would not start on damp, cold mornings, often taking 30 - 40 minutes to get it to start. After reading several forums I found users who were doing this to "fix" the problem. I thought I would tape this for anyone who was thinking of doing the same but doesn't know anything about cars. Like me. :)
Note: I owe thanks to meron for the post at this link http://townhall-talk.edmunds.com/direct/view/.f1137a7/83 it is where I first heard about this solution.
Update 10.6.2012: I added a switch, I believe it was this one http://www.radioshack.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2062533 I installed it with it in the off position, started the car, switched it to On while the car was running and the service engine light went away. Car started fine after that. I just shut it off again as it was cold one morning this week and I had trouble getting the car started. Once I got it running, turned it off and haven't had trouble starting it since. YMMV
Pontiac Grand Am turn signal fix / repair
Replacement of faulty flasher switch corrected my turn signal problems. Turn signal would work correctly at times, and incorrectly at other times. This drove me crazy and was extremely hazardous when driving, no one could help me correct the problem. I recommend purchasing a new flasher at a reputable auto parts store. In the demonstration I used one from a salvage yard.

Samantha of Belding MI (08/06/08)
I own a 2003 Chevy Impala. I purchased this car in Sept. of 2005. 3 days after we purchased the car, the Security light came on. 5 days later, my car wouldn't start. My radio would come on, but my car wouldn't even roll over. It took me 15 to 20 mins. to mess with the keys to try to start it. My husband is a certified Mechanic and he couldn't find out what was wrong with this. We even took it to a dealership and they said that it could be 3 of the things. To this day, my car still won't start when the security light comes on. I have NEVER owned a vehicle that had problems with starting
Courtney of Camby IN (07/12/08)
On December 1,2007 the security light on my 2003 Chevy Impala began coming on intermittently. When I took it in to have it checked it wouldn't come on. Shortly after the security light started coming on (the security light never stayed on steady)my power door locks quit working. My husband replaced the fuse and they would work for a few days and then quit again. On May 9,2008 I drove my Impala about 25 miles from my home, turned off the engine and went into a store for about 15 minutes. When I came out my car started but my radio read LOCKED. It then went off and never happened again. Later that day I was in and out of stores and everytime it started and was running just fine until I went somewhere and left it parked for about 45 minutes. When I came out it wouldn't start. I turned the key and my radio would come on and my CHECK ENGINE light would come on. I tried about 3 times and then it started. I went to the grocery store and when I came out it once again wouldn't start. My radio would come on and my CHECK ENGINE light would come on. After a few more tries it started. I took my groceries home, never turning off my engine and then drove my car straight to BIG JOHN'S AUTO REPAIR. On May 17, 2008 I drove about 10 miles from my house and turned off my engine for about an hour and when I tried to leave, big surprise, my car wouldn't start. Afraid of being stranded somewhere I was very leary of driving it.

Many GM vehicles are experiencing PassLock II system failures. I own a 2003 Chevy Impala and have had a lot of trouble with the car not starting and the security light coming on. These events seem random for the past 2 years. I did not take this car to a GM certified dealer because I don't feel like being taken to the cleaners. What I did is very unusual, but I tore the dash apart and looked at their PassLock II system myself. I am very experienced in electronics, engine management controls and software. Eventually, I removed the ignition switch and really did a detailed investigation. What I found is that GM completely under-designed the system.
