Muffler Corrosion Tip - Drill Small Hole

Nathan at Midas Muffler recommends this minor modification and when he was installing mufflers he did this with each & every muffler he installed. Drill a small hole at the bottom of your muffler to allow water/condensation to drain. This will help prevent premature rusting of the muffler especially on those short trips where the muffler never gets hot enough to boil away the water content. No, this will NOT make the muffler louder. No, the hole will NOT get bigger with time. This is a tried, true & tested modification for cold climates. Your muffler will last years longer especially up here in Canada where we get freezing temperatures every winter. Prior to shooting the video, I'd used the car the previous night for a short run to my son's house and consequently the muffler didn't get hot enough to boil off the water vapour ( part of the engine's Exhaust emissions). The next morning, I drilled the hole and sure enough there was still half a cup of water inside the muffler from last night's trip. Over the years (and especially during the winter when that water expands as it freezes), this will destroy the muffler prematurely. ** 2nd update: 12 February 2013 - I'm still using the same (the original) muffler on the car - a 1997 Toyota Camry LE. The muffler (and the car) are still in great shape. Chris in Winnipeg, Canada.

PT Cruiser Custom Exhaust
This is a custom Exhaust tip we made for a PT Cruiser. It's pretty much the greatest Exhaust system of all time. BTW, to address the endless comments about it from people who don't understand just how fragile an engine ISN'T, there is no way this will hurt the engine. The engine is a spinning mass of iron, aluminum and explosions. The Exhaust apparatus is plastic, latex, and tape. One of these things is stronger than the other.

FZ6 Exhaust Drilled Before & After (Short Version)
The stock Exhaust on the FZ6 is too quiet. You can hear the engine mechanics over the idle Exhaust... so I decided to drill part of the baffle. The FZ6's Exhaust has 3 different chambers that the Exhaust gasses channel around. Drilling into the Exhaust gives a shortcut for the Exhaust gasses to make a quick exit... effectively making it louder. This video has true stereo sound. *HOW TO* I used a masonry 10x300mm drill bit to make a little hole in each Exhaust. Then I used a 22x300mm drill bit to make the rest of the hole. *ADVICE* Trying to drill steel with a 22mm masonry piece is hard work and I actually burnt out a drill doing it. This is why it is advised to use a smaller drill bit to make a hole. Unless you have a proper metal drill bit of course.

Reasons for Muffler Leaking Fluid
Auto Talk 101: Potential Reasons for Liquid Coming Out of Muffler - as part of the expert series by GeoBeats. Auto Talk 101 - Potential Reasons for Liquid Coming Out of Muffler If you see liquid dripping out of your muffler or your tailpipe, your Exhaust system, generally that's condensation. Because Exhaust systems get quite hot, they will, when they are cooling down cause some moisture to collect in your muffler and your pipes and then it will drip out. It's harmless. It's normal. Don't need to worry about it. What it does do is contribute to the rusting out of your Exhaust system. And usually we see that on cars that get driven on a lot of short trips. Where the Exhaust doesn't really get up to operating temperature to evaporate that moisture out of there. And so, the moisture lays in the bottom of the pipes, causes them to rust out pretty much early.

Using a Torch to Remove a Rusty Muffler Part 1 - EricTheCarGuy
Using a Torch to Remove a Rusty Muffler Part 1 - EricTheCarGuy This one is for my son Page who happens to have the same problem as his uncle, a bad muffler. I have to admit to having some fun making this video, I love using torches, they can be a very powerful tool and get you out of a jam when you need it. I guess it goes without saying that you have to be careful doing this however since you can get hurt using torches, just remember, don't panic, work the problem and you will be fine. Also, work safe and use some common sense when using them and wear your safety glasses with the protective shading, it does make a difference.
