2012 Ford F150 Ecoboost Problems 2 **update**
**UPDATED INFO** April 28th 2013
After being the squeaky wheel for a long time...telling them my vehicle was not safe to drive while getting angry at my dealer and Ford....the very next day, magically, there was a new Intercooler ready to be installed in my truck. So I dropped it off and again they kept it for 3 days. I have now been driving it for over 2 weeks with the UPDATED Intercooler. My thoughts? Well, power has decreased. It doesn't have the same snap that it once had, and more often than not, when doing a full acceleration (like passing on a two-lane), you'll just hear the engine reving but no turbo/Boost sound. Dissapointing. Maybe not caused by the new Intercooler...but most likely a software change courtesy of Ford. Second, the mileage. It has NOT increased. I'm still getting anywhere between 15.2 and 15.9 L/100km. And for those of you who asked why I was using premium gas when attempting to get MAX mpg's during long road trips....well if you know anything about gas and ethanol, you'd know that ethanol has 30% less energy than standard gasoline. Premium gas doesn't have ethanol, thus it should produce better mpg's.
And lastly, it still cuts out on me! While not as frequent as it did before the Intercooler change, it will still do it. In fact, it has happened 2x now since I've had it changed. That's over 2 weeks ago and a couple thousand km's of driving.
In any case, I still like the truck, it's great! The engine...big mistake. And I'm not posting these comments and videos with intentions to bash Ford, or aggrevate die-hard Ford fans (you know who you are!...and please, this is MY 3rd F150!)...I'm just telling my story to the world in hopes that it will make people think twice before buying an F150 with the ecoBoost engine.
And another thing....those of you who are commenting "never had a problem; mine's good; I have XXX,XXXkm's and not a single problem"....yah right. Tell me another story!
-----------------------------------------------------
Second time that day! I went to merge onto the freeway and the truck fell flat on it's face. Check engine light flashed, wrench symbol appeared, engine running very rough (limp mode), basically won't drive...well...unless you call 5 km/h driving! This truck has done this frequently since I bought it. When it was newer it would cut-out, reduce power, check engine light would flash for about 30 seconds to a minute....then correct itself. But now it's getting worse when this happens...to the point where the truck will barely move. It has been to Ford service many times for inspection/software updates...but every time they just tell me to just keep driving it. LOL! The last time it was in for service (they kept it for 3 days!) they told me the Intercooler had failed and they would need to replace it. BUT...the re-designed Intercooler is backordered 3 months...at minimum!
BTW - gas mileage sucks. Do not believe the advertisements or dealer! The best I've ever gotten with this truck is 12.8 L/100km (i.e. 22 Canadian MPG, 18 US MPG). That's at 110 km/hr with premium gas, Mobil 1 5w30, k&n air filter, flat prairie highways, no head/tail wind, 20c temps, 1,600km round trip, tonneau cover, all calculated out manually. Truck is a 4x4 XTR SuperCrew, 6.5ft box, 3.55 gears.
My everyday (~90% highway and 10% city) average mileage is around 15.6 L/100km (i.e. 18 Canadian mpg or 15 US mpg). It's supposed to get 10 L/100km!! That's 28 Canadian MPG or 23 US MPG!!
These engines should be recalled! If your heart is set on an F150, please avoid the 3.5L ecoBoost engine...go with the 5.0L or 6.2L V8
