[HD] Clutch Pedal Adjustment
I figured I'd make a video on one way to adjust a clutch pedal cable: under the hood. First, before opening the hood, I'd look at the tutorial below and check if yours is adjustable under the dashboard.
http://forums.evolutionm.net/evo-how-requests-questions-tips/260783-how-clutch-pedal-adjustment.html
That's one of many tutorials you can find on Google. But here I do a tutorial on adjusting it under the hood. Basically these are your steps.
1. Determine how the pedal needs to be adjusted. If there is a lot of free play in the pedal and the clutch doesn't engage all the way when pedal is to the floor (symptoms include difficulty getting into gear, jumping out of gear (usually first gear), and multiple gears grinding), then your cable will need to be tightened. If the clutch pedal is all the way out, in first gear, but the car just revs and doesn't move anywhere, it needs to be loosened.
2. Open the hood.
3. Locate the clutch cable. Usually you can look under the dash and find where the cable goes through the firewall. If you notice no cable (under the dash or under the hood), then you have a hydraulic clutch system and that cannot be adjusted. You will need a new clutch. Another way to see where the clutch cable is is to have someone step on the clutch while you look under the hood. You'll be able to see the cable moving (if the engine isn't complex enough to block the view). Once you locate the clutch, move on.
4. Run along the cable until you find what looks like an adjusting nut. Consult your car's repair manual if you have one. If you are unsure of what to adjust, ask a mechanic. Usually, the nut will be right before where the actual clutch plate is, by the flywheel in the transmission, and at the end of the cable.
5. Once the adjusting nut is found, tighten or loosen as necessary. Some engine parts (like in my video, I took out the spare tire and the spare tire holder) may need to be removed for easier access. Again, if you are uncomfortable with this, consult a mechanic or repair manual.
6. After you think you've adjusted it, go inside and start the engine. Try to drive a couple feet and see if the pedal feels right.
7. Turn the car off and readjust as necessary. Tighten/loosen it until you get a comfortable pedal. Just play with it until you are satisfied (don't be perverted). When finished, close the hood and take the car for a test drive.
You just gotta experiment with the adjusting. But in the end, the repair will be free, allow for smoother shifting, and give you the satisfaction of fixing your car. Better than taking it to a mechanic. It's a pretty easy fix and doesn't take much time at all. All repairs are done at your risk and I accept no responsibility for any damages. I am merely showing a guide to adjusting the pedal. All cars are different.
