2014 BMW M5 Competition vs 2014 Mercedes-Benz E63 AMG S Model! - Head 2 Head Ep. 44
On this episode of Head 2 Head Jonny Lieberman is joined by Mike Shaffer
and two extremely potent hyper sedans, the 2014 BMW M5 Competition and the
2014 Mercedes-Benz E63 AMG S Model. Between the two of them, these two
mighty Germans produce 1152horsepower and 1092
pound-feet of torque. On paper. After a day of horsing around/testing
Shaffer and Lieberman grow suspicious of each twin-turbo V-8's actual output. So, they take them to
the Dyno gurus at K&N
engineering to learn what's what. The results very well may shock and amaze
you. However, the boys come to the conclusion that numbers are only exactly
that: only numbers, and numbers only matter so much. One true test of a
super sedan is how it handles a twisting stretch of tarmac. The other is
how much you yearn for the car after you've walked away from it. How much
the keys itch in your pocket. While the results are definitive, this Head 2
Head is much closer than most. Have a watch!

Full review of the 2009 Mercedes Comand system
Cockpit Management and Data system - COMAND for short - acts as a "command
center" for all audio, telematics and telecommunications functions on
Mercedes-Benz vehicles. Depending on vehicle specification, functions like
the radio, CD player, DVD player, navigation system with dynamic routing,
and amplifiers are all integrated in the COMAND system.
A high-performance processor controls the system and manages the various
programs. If requested by the driver, the CD changer, sound system, TV
receiver, telephone and Linguatronic voice control system can also be
linked up to COMAND via an optical fibre ring bus named D2B or MOST.
The latest generation of the COMAND system used in the Mercedes-Benz
S-Class boasts a large color TFT screen in 16:9 (wide-screen) format, and
uses a multi-directional wheel - located in the center console - to
navigate and use the numerous menus and functions. The system allows the
control of a huge number of features, from seat bolster inflation to the
With the Mercedes-Benz COMAND APS system, for instance, the car radio can
act in concert with the telephone to establish contact with a service
provider that will transmit digital traffic-jam warnings to the navigation
system via SMS and recommend a detour if necessary.
The COMAND APS system includes a navigation computer with a second DVD
player in the boot. The speech technology engine, used in the application
is provided by Nuance CommunicationsI recently purchase a 2009 Mercedes
CLK350 with Comand Navigation System. I've had a BMW Z4 factory Nav system
and a Megellan portable system, so I have a number of years experience
using Nav systems. I have read, re read, and re read again the Operator
Manual and I have still not been able to understand how to 'effectively"
use the Mercedes Nav system to direct me to a location using a reasonable
In my experience, if you are clueless on how to get somewhere, a Nav system
will get you there, but not always using the most logical or quickest
route. My experience so far tell me the my new Mercedes Nav system is the
most ill-logical, worthless, piece of crap, Nav system I've ever owned.
I'd rather not have to rely on my 3 yr old portable Megellan Nav system,
sticking to the windsheld of my $60k new Mercedes, with it's
state-of-the-art Comand Nav System, but I guess if I have to rely on a Nav
system getting me somewhere, I can't trust the Mercedes.
Fitted as standard, the latest COMAND multimedia system enables convenient,
intuitive operation of a range of vehicle functions. The enhanced system
includes an ECO function that plots the most fuel-efficient route, up to 40
GB HDD storage for the navigation system, 3D map display, and PIN-protected
navigation update. It also comes with TMC (Traffic Message Channel) to help
you stay one step ahead of road congestion.
Entertainment highlights include a 7.2 GB Music Register for storing audio
files and a new music search function. This enables you to search by
categories such as album or genre on the hard disk, SD-Card, USB device and
CD/DVD player. You'll also appreciate Bluetooth® connectivity for
hands-free phone calls, the latest Linguatronic voice-control system and a
handy USB port in the glove compartment.

n car-speak, acronyms have their pros and cons. Alphanumeric, gobbledygook
names force customers to use the parent company's name every time they
identify a car, casting a halo effect for the brand. "I drive a Legend,"
for example, did less for Acura than, "I drive an Acura." And so the RL was
Now apply that thinking to Mercedes-Benz, which, to be fair, has always
used alphanumeric names. But as the company expanded its lineup to some 15
separate nameplates—not counting the AMG models—it resulted in
confusion on the showroom floor and significant marketing challenges in
promoting individual models. Things needed to get simpler, and they have.
The replacements for Mercedes' mid-size CLK-class coupe and cabriolet
models will henceforth be identified as part of the E-class family. (The CL
coupes will become part of the S-class lineup.)
E-class Innards, C-class Dimensions
Unlike the last C124 E-class coupe from the mid-1990s, as well as most of
the E-class coupes before it, the 2010 E coupe is not simply a two-door
version of the 2010 E-class sedan. Rather, as with the CLK, it is more or
less a blend of C-class and E-class components under the skin. But whereas
the CLK was more C-class than E-class, the new E coupe has more suspension
and powertrain bits in common with the E than the C, according to
Mercedes-Benz USA product manager Bernhard Glaser. Dimensionally, however,
the E coupe is much closer to the compact C than the mid-size E, sharing
the C-class's 108.7-inch wheelbase, and the exterior dimensions remain
within an inch or two of the C's, even given the wider, longer, and lower
bodywork. Compared with the E-class sedan, however, the E coupe has a
three-inch-lower roof and five fewer inches of wheelbase and is about 200
pounds lighter, seven inches shorter, and a whopping five-and-a-half inches
E-class Style Inside and Out
Mercedes clearly wants the E coupe to be seen as an E, and so it adopts the
sedan's design cues, including quad headlamps and the Ponton-inspired rear
quarters. Few pieces are actually shared, however. Look closer, and you'll
notice that the fender contours are ever so slightly exaggerated compared
with those of the sedan and that the low-beam headlamps are unique. Unique
also describes the grille treatment—here, it features two bars bracketing
the three-pointed star, whereas the sedan has three or four grille slats
with a vertical hood ornament. Most distinct, however, is the roofline,
which, like that of the CLK, remains pillarless (that is, if you don't
count the mullion that forms the little rear quarter-window). Wheels start
at 17 inches in diameter, with 18s optional on the E350 and standard on the
E550. All E coupes get a full-length, partly retractable sunroof as
standard equipment, the light from which is particularly appreciable from
the snug rear bucket seats. In the front row, the low-mounted seats ensure a
sporty driving position, and settling in is made easier as the seatbelts
are presented on startup by motorized arms. The driver faces a dashboard
that recalls the sedan's retro-inspired, angular cabinetry without copying
it outright. Differences include a subtle V-shape that helps reduce the
design's imposing squareness, and a conventional console-mounted
transmission shifter—as found on the C-class—stands in for the sedan's
column-mounted electronic gear stalk. The driver faces arguably one of
Mercedes' best-ever gauge clusters, which combines five Porsche-like
intersecting circles with clear, crisp displays. All E-classes feature
Mercedes' COMAND infotainment system that bundles secondary controls into a
reasonably sensible screen-based interface, and E550 coupes add navigation
as standard. Other options include front-seat ventilation, pneumatically
adjustable seat bolsters, and a five-channel surround-sound stereo. Sadly,
there's nothing on the list capable of adding any visual spice to the
conservative burled-wood-trim interior décor, which is as exciting as a
bank lobby, especially compared with the intense driving environs of the
Audi A5 and the BMW 3-series coupe. It's reasonable to assume more
interesting trim options are forthcoming
2010 Mercedes Benz E350 Sedan Interior
www.eurocarnews.com - Mercedes-Benz designers paid careful attention to the
E-Class sedan interior, to ensure that every surface is appealing in form,
color and material. The cockpit features five analog gauges, including two
pairs that overlap each other. Standard equipment includes a premium
leather-covered steering wheel with integrated multi-function switches and
a Direct Select electronic shift lever mounted on the steering column.
Also standard is a new COMAND system featuring a large seven-inch color
display screen with a standard in-dash, six-disc CD/DVD changer and a
Bluetooth interface that allows a phone still in a pocket or purse to be
operated through the car's audio system. Using a console-mounted
controller, the central display in the dash can be operated by either the
driver or front passenger.

2010 Mercedes Benz E350 Sedan Action
Standard on E350 sedan, agility control suspension provides the best of
both worlds for a conventional coil-spring suspension. A small piston is
connected to a bypass port in the hydraulic flow of each shock absorber.
Its design provides a softer, quieter ride on normal roads but retains full
shock damping over dips and twisty roads when it's really needed.
Startup and demonstration of the 2011 BMW 535i sedan
This is the new BMW 5 series sedan for the 2011 model year. It's pretty
much a "little brother" or a "poor man's" version of the 7 series. I spent
some time trying to figure out the iDrive navigation system among other
features and plus the startup in this vehicle is VERY quiet. This was
during the Ultimate Drive Event at Nick Alexander BMW Imports in Huntington
