New Volvos Intense Driving Tests
Hällered, a fenced-in 7 million m² area an hour away from Gothenburg, Sweden, is Volvo Cars main testing facility. The track stretches 26 km, consisting of 15 different test tracks designed to simulate every type of road surface and weather condition a car can be subjected to during its long life time, including a fully-equipped public highway within the area. The tests are carefully planned and computer monitored. In just a few months, cars are aged as much as during the entire anticipated lifetime of the vehicles in normal traffic, thanks to test drivers working around the clock. The car's active safety system is also tested at the facility. A special rig has been developed just to test the Pedestrian Detection system that should detect pedestrians and apply the brakes if the driver does not react in time.

Volvo S40 1.6 110ch DRIVe Summum
En attendant la nouvelle S60, chez Volvo, la seule familiale du catalogue cest la S40. Le saviez-vous? Cest à ce jour la berline la plus sobre de sa catégorie.
Larrivée sur le 1.6 diesel 110ch du label DRIVe, caractérisé par une aérodynamique optimisée, des pneus verts, des rapports allongés et un système stop and start, limitent la consommation à 3,9l au 100 en cycle mixte et les rejets de CO2 à 104 g/km!
Présentée dans sa finition haut de gamme, Summum, la S40 dispose de sièges en cuir, chauffants et à réglages électriques. Note : quelle que soit la finition, lairbag passager déconnectable est une option à 60 euros. Mesquin ! Comme à laccoutumé, lhabitacle est dune sobriété exemplaire. Seule touche de folie, cette console centrale flottante. Côté finitions, les matériaux sont assemblés avec soin.
Léventail de motorisations de la S40 est particulièrement fourni avec 8 blocs. Le 1.6 110ch, le plus petit diesel, est parfait pour la ville où il affiche dailleurs une conso record de seulement 3,4l au 100. Sur route, malgré des 3e et 4e rapports allongés, le bloc ne se montre pas trop à la peine. Enfin, si la berline sillustre pour son confort dans ses versions traditionnelles, ses suspensions abaissées la rendent plus raide.
Le principal bémol de la Suédoise, cest son habitabilité ! Il faut dire que cest la plus petite des familiales. Ses concurrentes sont 6 à 37cm plus longues. A trois, sur la banquette, il faut jouer des coudes Autant le dire : les grands gabarits ne seront pas à leur aise : la garde au toit est vraiment réduite ! Côté confort, bons points la S40 reçoit vitres électriques et accoudoir central de série.
Le coffre nest pas non plus le point fort de la S40. Le volume est aussi restreint que dans une Peugeot 407 et donc bien loin des Volkswagen Passat et Renault Laguna en tête de liste. Et la surface a beau doubler, une fois les banquettes rabattues, les rivales font toujours mieux. Agréable, la berline séquipe doffice dune roue galette. Le kit anti-crevaison est une option facturée 100 euros ! Cela fait cher le compresseur !
La Volvo S40 sillustre pour ses faibles consommations de carburant et ses rejets de Co2 très limités. Elle est dailleurs éligible à un bonus de 500 euros. Mais si vous navez pas la fibre écologique, passez votre chemin et préférez plutôt le diesel 136ch, plus punchy ! Tarifs de la Volvo S40 DRIve 24 950 euros. Notre version est à 30 600 euros. Pour le coup, un brin cher !

The current generation of the Volvo S40 has taken a visual step closer to the Volvo S80 - giving customers large-car properties in a compact format and with clearly sporty overtones.
CHASSIS
Well-balanced and controlled driving
The chassis, with spring struts at the front and Multilink axle at the rear, is set up for controlled, reassuring driving manners and alert steering response. The Multilink rear axle is an independent rear suspension system featuring a number of links and it is designed to offer a good combination of controlled wheel movements and a high level of ride comfort. A long wheelbase and wide track together with a very rigid body contribute to the predictable, controlled driving manners.
DSTC standard
Volvo's advanced DSTC (Dynamic Stability and Traction Control) stability-enhancing system is fitted as standard. DSTC intervenes and helps stabilise the car if it registers any tendency to skid.
DRIVELINE
Transverse engines
The engines in the Volvo S40 are transversely installed in-line units. Together with large displacement, the five-cylinder configuration provides high torque across a broad rev band and thus also swift acceleration and excellent driveability within a wide speed range. Four-cylinder engines are also available.
T5 with 230 hp The Volvo S40 T5 is the top model, featuring a turbocharger and five-speed automatic transmission. It produces 230 hp and 320 Nm of torque. There are also other petrol engine versions available, as well as a 2.0-litre bio-ethanol Flexifuel variant on certain markets.
2-litre diesel The five-cylinder 2-litre turbodiesel introduced in the all-new Volvo S60 is now available throughout Volvo Cars' model range. The five-cylinder D3 is in principle the same engine as the well-established 2.4-litre diesel, but its displacement has been reduced with a shorter stroke to optimise fuel consumption.
The engine has been optimised for low fuel consumption and the injection system has a different type of piezoelectric fuel injector compared with the D5 engine. These injectors minimise consumption with exceptionally rapid and precise injection pulses under high pressure.
This promotes extremely efficient combustion.
In the Volvo S40 the 2-litre turbodiesel is available in two variants:D4 with 177 hp and 400 Nm of torque.D3 with 150 hp and 350 Nm of torque.
Both the D3 and D4 meet the Euro 5 emission standards. All the variants of the two-litre turbodiesel can be specified with a six-speed automatic transmission or six-speed manual gearbox.
D2 with 114 g CO2 emissions
The S40 is in addition available with the 1.6-litre D2 diesel engine, which also complies with the Euro 5 standards. Fuel consumption is 4.3l/100 km (EU Combined), which corresponds to CO2 emissions of 114 g/km. The engine produces 115 hp and 270 Nm of torque and now comes with a six-speed manual gearbox.
DRIVe with 99 g CO2 emissions
The can also get the upgraded 1.6-litre diesel engine that meets the Euro 5 Exhaust emission regulations being implemented in January 2011. The further-developed engine combined with a six-speed manual gearbox and start/stop function have made it possible for Volvo's engine experts to cut CO2 emissions from 104 g/km to 99 g/km.
