Land Rover re-calibrated drivers' perceptions of what was possible with a small 4x4 when it originally introduced the Freelander. It was good to drive on the road, and equally impressive off it.
The Freelander 2 is no different, feeling as capable wherever you choose to drive it - but more luxurious too. Part of its enormous appeal is its driving character on the road, where the Freelander 2 feels more like a tall estate car than a wobbly off-roader. The diesel engine is offered in two outputs, while Land Rover has taken a revolutionary step (for a company founded on it reputation for world beating 4x4s) and introduced a front-wheel drive model for those seeking the very best fuel economy.

BMW X3 review - CarBuyer

The latest four-wheel drive SUV from BMW, the X3 is a very accomplished road car that sits just below the X5 in BMW's impressive line-up.
Range Rover Evoque review - CarBuyer
Full review: http://www.carbuyer.co.uk/reviews/land-rover/evoque/suv/review
The premium SUV sector will never be quite the same again, as the Range Rover Evoque has raised the bar to an entirely new level. It's available in two compact bodystyles -- with three doors or five -- and with a choice of three engines and a trio of luxury trim levels, while the pricing structure makes it the perfect entry point to Range Rover ownership.
Range Rover Sport review - CarBuyer
Full review: http://www.carbuyer.co.uk/reviews/land-rover/range-rover-sport/sports-utility-vehicle/review
The Range Rover Sport is more modern and easier to manoeuvre than the Range Rover proper - and is nearly as good off-road. It has a wonderfully designed, beautifully finished interior, loads of space and an enormous boot. For keen drivers, there's the brutally fast and fuel guzzling 5.0-litre Supercharged version. If money really is no object, go for that one. For the rest of us, the 3.0-litre diesel is still brilliant, and at least 50 per cent more economical.

Land Rover Discovery review - CarBuyer
Full review: http://www.carbuyer.co.uk/reviews/land-rover/discovery/sports-utility-vehicle/review
The '4' part of the Discovery's name refers to the fact it's the fourth version of a car that has improved in giant leaps since 1998. The latest Discovery looks much like the third edition, but it's actually in a different league for cabin quality. What's more, the 3.0-litre V6 diesel engine is a real gem, it's powerful yet quiet and very smooth. Land Rover calls its Discovery 'the world's most versatile car' and it's hard to fault that claim. Of course, you'll pay handsomely for that versatility, but few cars combine off-road prowess with practicality and luxury feel the way the Discovery does.

Kia Sportage review - CarBuyer
Full review: http://www.carbuyer.co.uk/reviews/kia/sportage/sports-utility-vehicle-3/review
The Kia Sportage is not just a great sport utility vehicle, it's CarBuyer's first ever Car of the Year, as well as its Best 4x4. And no wonder... it's the Korean firm's best offering yet. Good enough to trouble all comers in the growing crossover market.
Volvo XC60 review - CarBuyer
Full review: http://www.carbuyer.co.uk/reviews/volvo/xc60/sports-utility-vehicle/review
Think of the XC60 more as a raised family-sized estate car than a proper off-roader. It's practical, classy and very easy to drive. We're big fans of the comfortable ride and the great view you get from the high driving position. Offering neither the sporty, firm ride of the Audi Q5 or the rugged ability of the Land Rover Freelander, the XC60 falls somewhere in between -- and as such strikes a great balance for family buyers.

Mitsubishi Outlander review - CarBuyer
Full review: http://www.carbuyer.co.uk/reviews/mitsubishi/outlander/sports-utility-vehicle/review
The Mitsubishi Outlander is the Japanese firm's contender in the compact 4x4 class. Competing with established rivals like Land Rover's Freelander, unusually, the Outlander benefits from a third row of seats. They're small, but for those occasions you've a couple more children to carry they're useful. The styling is tidy inside and out, and people carrier-like features such as sliding, easy-fold seats make it a practical choice.

BMW X5 review - CarBuyer
Full review: http://www.carbuyer.co.uk/reviews/bmw/x5/sports-utility-vehicle/review
With seven seats, an upmarket interior and great build quality, BMW's X5 makes a formidable family car. What's more, BMW has made the latest version practical and luxurious. The pair of optional seats in the boot are useful, and when they're not in place the car has lots of luggage space. The X5 has some off-road ability, but during its development, engineers concentrated on getting the performance on tarmac spot on

Jaguar XJ review - CarBuyer
Full review: http://www.carbuyer.co.uk/reviews/jaguar/xj/saloon/review
The latest XJ is Jaguar's all-new high-technology flagship. Not only is it the most distinctive looking road car the firm has ever designed, it's also more fun to drive than rivals from Mercedes and BMW.
KIA Sorento review - CarBuyer
Full review: http://www.carbuyer.co.uk/reviews/kia/sorento/sports-utility-vehicle/review
For large families the Sorento makes for an excellent all-round car. The 2.0-litre and 2.2-litre diesel engines are both relatively refined and offer good fuel economy and pace. Buyers shouldn't worry about reliability either, with all Kias covered by a seven-year warranty. On the road, the Sorento is comfortable enough to make long motorway journeys pass by quickly and feels planted in the corners but it struggles to deliver any sort of driving thrills.
Chevrolet Captiva SUV review - What Car?
Read the What Car? Chevrolet Captiva review http://bit.ly/x3ztSI
The Chevrolet Captiva is a spacious, practical and great-looking family SUV that comes with lots of equipment and a brilliant warranty package.
The engines could be more flexible, the cabin materials could be classier, and some of the Captiva's key rivals cost thousands less to buy.
