With the introduction of CUE - Cadillac User Experience - Cadillac is taking the lead in "user friendly" automotive technology. CUE merges intuitive design with industry-first controls and commands for information and entertainment data.
Beginning in 2012 in the Cadillac XTS, ATS, and SRX crossover, CUE will be unique to each consumer as it pairs data from up to 10 Bluetooth-enabled mobile devices, USBs, SD cards, and MP3 players.

For example, most of today's luxury cars have approximately 20 buttons controlling the radio and entertainment functions: CUE reduces that number to just 4 buttons!
CUE allows drivers to safely store such mobile devices as a smart phone or iPod - and channel the information on those devices, along with navigation tools, weather maps with Doppler radar, AM/FM radio, instant messages, and emails through a central portal in the vehicle - allowing the driver to keep their hands on the wheel and eyes on the road.

The "heart" of CUE is the 8-inch LCD touch screen which is seamlessly integrated into the top of the central instrument panel and a motorized, fully capacitive faceplate at the bottom which conceals a 1.8L storage area. The LCD screen displays CUE's homepage - which resembles a smart phone
screen by using large, easy-to-target icons to execute commands.
CUE's LCD screen features the driver's five most frequently used functions stored along the top of the screen. Along the bottom, users can select up to 60 favorites from music to points of interest, addresses, weather/direction maps, phone numbers and system commands.
The steering wheel contains a five-way controller on the right side to navigate the cluster display, a volume control and buttons to cycle through favorites. The five-way controller on the left side manages cruise control functions, voice recognition, and phone hang-up. CUE's customization and control features are further enhanced through OnStar's suite of safety, security, and connectivity services.
CUE Auto Industry Firsts
The longer a driver owns their Cadillac with CUE, the more the CUE will do for the driver as the system is able to be updated - which is an industry first. Among the additional CUE auto industry firsts include:
● Proximity Sensing: As users hand approaches the LCD screen, command icons (which can be arranged and customized by the user) appear.
● Haptic Feedback: Faceplate buttons "pulse" when pressed to acknowledge drivers commands - keeps driver's eyes on the road.
● Natural Speech Recognition: Drivers can speak "logically" with fewer specific commands to recall stored media or input navigation destinations. Text-to-Speech feature allows drivers to receive text messages by system voice and to send recorded text messages in return.

Innovative signature lighting adds elements of drama and security

DETROIT -- New techniques in lighting design are adding to the dramatic presence of luxury cars, while also providing real-world functional benefits. The all-new 2013 Cadillac XTS luxury sedan contains more than 20 separate light sources that "greet" the driver in a carefully choreographed sequence when the key fob is pressed.
The new XTS, launching in the second quarter, includes LEDs embedded in the door handles, Cadillac-signature vertical LEDs in the headlights and taillights and ambient lighting in and around the car's perimeter. In addition to extending the car's design signature, the lighting provides convenience and helps provide additional security to drivers in parking lots at night.
Cadillac designers took advantage of consistent advances in LED technology to use lighting to convey drama and space alongside functional benefits.
"The new LED offerings now provide a new palette of color to bring more dramatic lighting effects that have never been available before," said Christos Roustemis, Cadillac interior designer.
On the inside, cooler blue lights accent the car's controls and instrumentation while warmer lights highlight passenger areas.
"We sketched each phase of the process to carefully choreograph how every important area inside and outside of the vehicle would come up and fade back down, similar to a production crew lighting a theater stage," Roustemis said.
The palette of colors also needed to harmonize with the interior colors as well as light emanating from the Cadillac User Experience (CUE) main LCD screen and instrument panel. The task was to make the ambient lighting enhance the experience and minimize distraction.
Creation of dramatic effects and pleasing spaces has long been a trademark of lighting design, said Rosemarie Allaire, a California-based architectural lighting designer. She says advances in LED lighting have opened the way to new possibilities in lighting design.
"In cars, just as in architecture, lighting defines how we feel about a space. It is both artistry and user experience," Allaire said. "For me, the beauty is in the blends, how you layer the affects, mix the light sources, and how you package it into the final product."
The XTS lighting choreography is timed to the fraction of a second by the car's central control system, and is cued by various triggers, such as the key fob, the doors and ignition switch. The car's exterior lighting brightens the perimeter of the car to provide an added level of security and make the car easier to locate.
Cadillac first used a vertical lighting signature as an exterior design theme in 1948. In Cadillac's Art & Science design language that has defined Cadillac for the last dozen years, designers use thin, vertical LED "light pipes" in both the front and rear corners of the car.

02-Apr-2012 Cadillac introduces technology and design enhancements to the SRX luxury crossover SUV this week at the New York International Auto Show. Among the new features for 2013 is CUE, the in-vehicle user experience that incorporates touch-screen controls similar to the most popular mobile devices.
The 2013 SRX's enhanced technology also contributes to safety, with Cadillac's new Driver Awareness and Driver Assist technology packages. Their features include Rear Cross Traffic Alert, Cadillac's Safety Alert Seat technology, Automatic Front and Rear Braking, Adaptive Cruise Control and more, using radar and other technologies to help avoid collisions.
Interior and exterior design updates further distinguish the 2013 SRX, while active noise cancelation technology helps provide a quieter driving experience. It goes on sale this fall.
"The 2013 SRX illustrates the Cadillac philosophy of never leaving well enough alone," said Don Butler, vice president of marketing for Cadillac. "The enhancements for the SRX -- including CUE -- are examples of how we're developing advanced technologies and pushing them consistently through the Cadillac portfolio. They are also some of the key elements of the all-new XTS luxury sedan and ATS compact sedan, which will expand the Cadillac portfolio this summer."
Since its redesign in 2009, the SRX has established a strong visual signature for Cadillac in the luxury crossover segment. The 2013 SRX refines that appearance with a new design for the front upper and lower grilles that conveys greater depth and the brand's attention to detail. The front fender vents are new and incorporate LED light pipes.
Three new exterior colors are offered: Evolution Green Metallic, Glacier Blue Metallic and Silver Coast Metallic. Also new is the SRX's range of 20-inch wheel designs, including new chrome and polished aluminum wheels for the Performance and Premium Collections -- the top two option packages.
The SRX is offered in FWD and Advanced AWD models, each powered by a 3.6L Direct Injection V-6 that was added for 2012. It is rated an SAE-certified 308 horsepower (230 kW) and 265 lb.-ft. of torque (358 Nm).

SAN DIEGO -- Cadillac CUE, a comprehensive in-vehicle experience that merges intuitive design with auto industry-first controls and commands for information and entertainment data, will benefit consumers by offering personalized, connected driving beginning in 2012.
"CUE will transform personal transportation by simply and efficiently integrating luxury design and instinctive technology with unparalleled levels of customized in-vehicle connectivity," Don Butler, Vice President, Cadillac Marketing, announced at the CTIA Wireless Association's Enterprise and Applications conference.
CUE will debut in 2012 in the Cadillac XTS and ATS luxury sedans and SRX luxury crossover. CUE is designed to be unique for each consumer, from the "simple user" to the fully connected "super user."
"For the tech-savvy, it's everything you want it to be -- a full suite of infotainment, navigation and communication tools that keeps you fully connected. For the tech-averse, its power is remarkably simple, intuitive and accessible," Butler said.
CUE, which stands for Cadillac User Experience, will pair entertainment and information data from up to 10 Bluetooth-enabled mobile devices, USBs, SD cards and MP3 players with a vehicle infotainment system that reduces complexity through customized information, natural voice commands and fewer buttons and larger icons

"Rather it allows consumers to securely store those mobile devices while channeling the information on those devices, along with your navigation tools, weather maps with Doppler radar, AM/FM and XM radio, instant messages and emails, through a central portal in your Cadillac, keeping hands on the wheel and eyes on the road."

All of CUE's controls use the same design vernacular to create a harmony unique to Cadillac," said Dave Lyon, executive director, Cadillac Interior Design. "Vibrant colors, a piano black face plate, precision-milled buttons, intuitive touch screen placement and sculpted front console provide a spacious, fashion-forward cabin."
To improve simplicity and connectivity for consumers, CUE will feature several auto industry firsts.
■Proximity Sensing: As the user's hand approaches the LCD screen, command icons appear. Icons can be customized and arranged by consumers to improve ease of use.
■Haptic Feedback: Buttons on the fully capacitive faceplate pulse when pressed to acknowledge the driver's commands and helps keep the driver's eyes on the road.
■Multi-Touch Hand Gestures: interactive motions (tap, flick, swipe and spread) popularized by smartphones and tablets allow tasks on the LCD screen, such as scrolling lists, zooming maps and searching favorites to be easily accomplished.
■12.3 in. LCD reconfigurable gauge cluster (on select models) offers four selectable displays -- Simple, Enhanced, Balanced and Performance -- that can mix traditional vehicle data such as a speedometer and fuel gauge with navigation, entertainment and 3D vehicle image.

■Linux operating system, "open" software platform and ARM 11 3-core processor, each operating at 400 million of instructions (mips) per second. This hardware setup offers 3.5 times more processing power than current infotainment systems, and allow developers to write applications to CUE that be downloaded by consumers.
"It's processing speed and power that make CUE so capable," said Bly.

2013 Cadillac SRX: Expert Car Review by Lauren Fix
The new and improved 2013 Cadillac SRX is the best-selling model line under the Cadillac brand. Let's take a closer look.
Model -- 2013 Cadillac SRX

Engine -- 3.6L V6 engine that produces 308 horsepower

The 2013 SRX has been freshened with a new front fascia that includes LED lighting in the fender vents. Inside, every SRX receives Cadillac's CUE 8-inch touch-screen infotainment system. Active-noise cancellation aims to make the SRX quieter, and new technology such as adaptive cruise control is available.
The 2013 Cadillac SRX seats five and comes in standard, premium, luxury and performance trims. Each trim has a V6 engine and a six-speed automatic transmission. All-wheel drive is optional. There are interior material upgrades, including wood trim, as well as additional technology and safety features.
My test drive was comfortable and the SRX had ample power and handled well on the road. Getting into the garage or a parking spot was made easier by the Safety Alert Seat, which sends subtle pulses through the seat cushion, alerting the driver of potential hazards.
The Cadillac CUE system was easy to use, with touch screen controls for navigation, Bluetooth, audio, temperature and more.

2013 Cadillac ATS CUE System Demo with Lead Industrial Designer Robert Jablonski

Robert, who has worked on both the Converj and Plantinum concept cars in the past, was gracious enough to give us a demo of the new CUE system found in the 2013 Cadillac ATS. Heck you can even learn a few tricks to help you operate the CUE system more smoothly.
Located in the gauge cluster is a high intensity and high resolution 5.7-inch display. The new 3-spoke steering wheel has a 5-way controller and voice recognition system. As the heart of the CUE system is an 8-inch display and fully capacitive faceplate. The CUE system from Cadillac offers 3 brand new features:
1) Proximity Sensing - As you reach for the large display, the CUE system senses your hand and activates.
2) Capacitive Touch -- This feature is very similar to a table or smart phone in that it allows the user to navigate and scroll via touch.
3) Haptic Feedback -- A little vibration or pulse is sent through the system to your finger that alerts you to the fact you have made a selection.
CUE makes it easy to add favorites, simply drag your favorites up and save. You can save radio stations, addresses, points of interest, contacts, and applications.
