Buick 3800 Engine Trouble: Rod Knock - bad Wrist Pin & Piston (not Lifters or Bearings)

Buick 3800 with rod knock. The problem is on the rod end with the wrist pin and piston. Upon tear down, no additional problems were found. Suspected cause is oil starvation or overheating.

Buick 3800 Bearings or Lifter or Rod Knocking with Valve Covers Off
Here is a longer video of the 1990 Buick Lesabre with major engine trouble. Hopefully this can be of use if someone can definatively identify the issue so that others who have a similar situation know what is going on with their engine. As for me, I know this engine is trashed. A new one will be arriving soon for the amount of $150 :)

Teardown and Inspection: Piston end rod knock and wrist pin
This is the engine from the 1990 Buick Lesabre. Had some serious issues! Failure is suspected to be due to overheating or oil starvation.

Symptoms: Rod Knock and Spun Bearings in Fiero 2.8L v6
Rod knock, game over. Friend got this 1986 Fiero SE 2.8L v6 w/4spd manual less than a week ago. Had leaky valve covers (worse than he thought). Ended up running out of oil and this is the result. Teardown revealed two rods completely missing their bearings, and four more spun bearings. Got a series II 3800 to swap in, might be fun :)

Checking rod end play buick 3800
Checking out the connecting rods on the crank end for excessive play. This seems to rule out spun rod bearings or similar problems in the bottom end. Any ideas for next thing to check?

Diagnosing the Engine Knock
Trying to figure out what the engine noise is. Looks like lifters that won't drain down plus maybe some plugged up oil squirters.

Result of Rod Knock
Result of Rod Knock. After pulling the engine there is a evident rod knock.

Weird 3800 Engine Noise
Top swapped 01 impala 3.8L. XP Hot Cam. 2.5" Down Pipe. Fender Well Intake. It seems to always make this odd noise I simply can't put my finger on. Things that I know it is NOT: Water pump, Acc. Belt Tensioner, S/C Belt Idler Pulleys, S/C Belt Tensioner. And I don't believe it's the A/C as it makes the same noise with the clutch engaged or not.

How To: Pressing Press-Fit Wrist Pins At Home
This video describes an easy method of pressing wrist pins into pistons. This method is better than using a hydraulic press because it doesn't put stress on any of the components. Of course, luck would have it that the pin I was pressing for this demonstration stopped short because I didn't have everything lined up perfectly, so it snagged and the rod cooled before I got it the whole way through (like I said, you have to work QUICKLY! :) No big deal though. The particular piston/rod set I was working on at the time was a set of Evo 9 pistons and 1G 4G63 DSM rods to be put into the block that is seen behind me.

Buick - Engine Noise and Repair Techniques (1993)
This video, taken from Buick's Know-how Series (KH-168), discusses engine noise and repair techniques for early 90's Series 3300/3800 engines. Topics covered include: general repair tips, noise diagnosis for knocking/ticking, and piston pin rattle.

What is this noise? did I spin a rod bearing?
just a noisy valve train or did i spin a bearing? I never over reved, oil change coming up though. and engine check light is not on. any input guys?? Thanks.

Jeep Engine Noise 2.5 broken piston skirt #3, tick, knock
The sound of a jeep motor with a broken piston skirt. I pulled the valve cover expecting a bent push rod, but no such luck. Rockers were moving fine, changed oil, push rods spin while running, did not go away after warming up or driving. 55,000 miles. Noise was more noticable underneath. Gets louder when applying accelerator. loosened the oil pan and fished around with my hand and collected 4 pieces that turned out to be the piston skirts.

Engine knocking sounds
Help wanted!! After service this knocking sounds started. I was in couple service, and they didn't know what is it!!

2001 Chevy Malibu 3.1L rod knock
Vehicle had intake manifold gasket replaced, throttle body and IAC cleaned. It then started stall while test driving, followed by starting to make this noise. The day after this video was made, I moved the car into my driveway and it stopped running for good, refusing to turn over. Once I opened it up, found one of the pistons had disintegrated and a chunk of it got wedged in the crank. I also found the head of a valve. My best guess right now is that a valve seat dropped into the cylinder and started to rattle around until it broke the valve, which then busted up the piston. The engine in the car has since been replaced and now runs like a champ.

subaru rod knock
subaru donuts cutting shitters, then rod knock. I will let the owner comment on what went wrong. the engine was rebuilt with cossworth forged internals shortly after, along with a massive turbo upgrade and fmic.

bad rod bearing noise.
this is my 1988 Subaru GL-10 turbo station wagon, rod bearing on number 4 went. made this video while looking for help. problem fixed.
