2012 Chevy Sonic LTZ
General Motors yanked back the sheets on its newest sub-compact from Chevrolet; the 2012 Sonic. The five-door hatch and four-door sedan models will be available with either a standard 1.8-liter four-cylinder engine or an optional turbo'd 1.4-liter mill that can be ordered up with either a five-speed manual trans or a six-speed slushbox. At the time of the unveiling, GM was mum on the Sonic's estimated miles per gallon rating but The General is now ready to talk a little mpg. The automaker is saying that the 2012 subcompact Sonic will achieve up to 40 mpg highway when it hits the market this fall. Though none of the numbers have been finalized by the EPA, GM's projected mileage figures seem highly likely considering that the Sonic packs the same powertrains as the heftier Chevrolet Cruze. The Cruze, which is rated at 24/36 mpg city/highway, obviously outweighs the Sonic and, therefore, we expect it to be the less fuel efficient vehicle of the two. For the sake of comparison, the outgoing Aveo, equipped with a manual trans, achieved an EPA rating of 25/35 mpg city/highway. The Sonic's 40-mpg rating would place it on par with the Ford Fiesta and ahead of both the Honda Fit and the Toyota Yaris

The new 2012 Chevrolet Sonic (Hatchback and Sedan)
Comes with hatchback and sedan. The Chevrolet Aveo is known as one of the least-expensive and least-liked subcompact cars you can buy. Now that Chevrolet has announced the Aveo's replacement, the little econobox will just become a bad memory. Meet the 2012 Chevrolet Sonic. "The 2012 Chevrolet Sonic is the small car GM has been saying it will build for decades," says Inside Line. "This time, however, the Sonic has been given a stylish look along with a generous helping of the company's latest technology. Penalty box? No, just a smaller version of the company's best sedans. At least that's how Chevrolet is pitching it." Still riding the wave of praise for the Chevrolet Cruze, an affordable small car that reviewers like for its upscale feel and comfortable cabin, Chevy is banking on the Sonic to extend the goodwill into the company's newest super-small car offering. AutoWeek reports, "The Sonic will come in two variants: a sedan that resembles a slimmed-down Cruze and a diminutive hatch. Two Ecotec engines will be available, including a 1.4-liter four-cylinder turbo pushing out 138 hp and 148 lb-ft of torque that can be paired with a six-speed manual gearbox. The standard engine will be a 1.8-liter four-cylinder making 135 hp and 123 lb-ft of torque; it will be offered with a five-speed manual or a six-speed automatic gearbox." Autoblog says that, with the Sonic, "it's clear that The General had its sights locked on the Fiesta from the get go. The Sonic hatchback packs more back seat room than its Blue Oval competitor and, with the rear bench folded flat, delivers more cargo room, as well." While the press hasn't gotten a full look at the sonic, which debuts later today at the Detroit auto show, the early reviewers are positive. "Chevy has built a subcompact car that's appealing for reasons other than price or gas mileage," says Kicking Tires. With the Ford Fiesta already tearing up the affordable small car rankings, and an all-new 2012 Honda Civic set to bow later this year, the Sonic could have its work cut out for it. But, all the competition is only good news for small car shoppers, who suddenly have plenty of strong options to chose from. In the market for a new car?
