Como o governo brasileiro aprovou a lei que torna obrigatório, até 2014, a presença de airbag duplo e freios com ABS como itens de série em todos os carros vendidos zero km, essa medida coloca em cheque a produção de veículos com projetos mais antigos e sem possibilidade de receber estes aparatos de segurança, a exemplo da VW Kombi, que desembarcou no Brasil em setembro de 1950. Mas uma fonte de dentro da Volkswagen nos informou que existem estudos avançados em São Bernardo do Campo, SP, para que a Kombi permaneça viva. Mesmo muito ultrapassada, de acordo com a Fenabrave (Federação Nacional da Distribuição de Veículos Automotores) , de janeiro a outubro deste ano foram vendidas um total de 20 918 Kombi. A grande maioria, destinadas ao trabalho, já que oferece excelente custo/benefício. Números que representam a liderança do segmento de veículos comerciais leves de uso misto, e uma parcela do mercado que, sem dúvida, a Volkswagen não quer perder. Com o lançamento mundial do VW Up! previsto para 2013, a novidade pode até ser fabricada no Brasil, na fábrica de Taubaté (SP). Por ter uma plataforma moderna, de baixo custo e bastante versátil, a Volkswagen estuda a possibilidade de estender a família Up!. A saída poderia substituir a antiga Kombi.
