In this episode of RoadTrip Mark Fulmer visits automotive design expert and journalist Del Coates at Thunderhill Raceway in Northern California as he puts his new BMW 335i on the track.

HPDE at Thunderhill in my Mazda3 -- NCRC 9/3/2010 -- my first time at this track, so lines could use some improvement. Just a quick clip of a few interesting laps from third session, following around a friend in his Mazdaspeed3, also passed an rx7 FD and a Mazdaspeed Miata. Sorry for the shaky video, loose headrest mount, gets bad above 100mph. top speed in straights was ~118.

Earlier in the day, I was running Stg 2+ and pulled far ahead of my friend's M3. Laguna has a few uphills, so with my 335i's LSD and track suspension providing an equalizer, my huge boundless torque seemed to be the winning factor.
For the last session of the day, we decided to take it easy and play catch. I dialed back to Stg 1, and let my friend go, then see if I could hang with him, making sure I gave him plenty of slack. The M3 would pull on the straight with Stg 1, but we were even with Stg 2+.
Maybe you can tell I was holding back on the power, for when my friend finally gave me the point by, I finally took advantage of the torque to pull away...he couldn't catch up again afterwards.
Not my most perfect run, but I thought it'd be an interesting video to share.

A clip of me catching a few cars, and picking up speed after getting into the clear. I was really starting to take off when the checkered flag got raised! Darn! Was an opportunity for faster times, but I did dial in a 1:54 lap. There's still a lot of secs to shave.

Thunderhill BMW 335i
11/14/2010 - First time at Thunderhill, just learning the lines on the first session of the day. Great weather, 70 deg, clear skies. Can't ask for better in November! My car is a modified 335i with PROcede v4, KW v3 w/ Swift Springs, Wavetrac LSD, AMS Intercooler, AR Downpipes, Goodyear F1 Asymmetrics. This session was warm-up, so running only 13 psi of Boost (15.5 psi is my max for another ~30-40whp), 50-70% throttle, and short shifting at 4-5K rpms. I was concerned about limp modes, but it turned out I had no issues the entire day. Even running so conservatively, this car had plenty of power (& torque!). Video taken w/ GoPro HD using suction cup mount on sunroof (1080p 30fpfs).

Ric McCormick Thunderhill Raceway Spec E30
This video contains footage from a recent Spec E30 race in N.A.S.A. featuring Ric McCormick behind the wheel. Ric goes from 6th to win and manages to set a new Spec E30 track record. Ric demonstrates left and right foot braking, great line, precise and quick car control, extreme race craft and consistency. Ric is a professional driver and instructor.
