BMW 1989 e30 325is swapped for m52 (98 328is motor/trans.). OBD1 conversions with S50 intake, 3.5'' 540i MAF, CAI, Custom Exhaust. All new sensors (OBD1). Red label ECU with TRM Tuning.... All that good stuff and troubles on "first start-up attempt". If you watch the video things would lean toward a bad MAF... but I tried 2... its possible however both are bad. Ideas???
Dodge Stealth Sputter
Whats wrong? Car will sputter out when under full throttle. Sometimes it will run fine and other times this will happen. Runs fine when MAF is unplugged.
Solved: It was a bad MAF sensor. Installed a known good one and the car ran fine.
Really Slow e30 Turbo
just a quick video of my car while out road tuning. gotta get my camber fixed and maybe some warmer weather so i actually get some traction.
Revving Engine with Bad MAF plugged in
Car starts on a dime after MAF gets unplugged again. Plug MAF in and rev the engine for it not to die to hear how good she sounds with bad AFR tune from Z32 MAF which is bad as well

2001 BMW 318ci cold starting problem
My 2001 BMW 318ci E46 engine (i think) has been having major troubles starting. It was diagnosed last week as having a shagged battery, so I replaced it with a new one and it only had a couple of small non-starts followed by normal starts. Now, it's deteriorated again and usually only starts after about 8 - 20 tries and won't start at all if it's too cold. For the last few weeks, bout 50% of the time it would fire, catch and then die, no matter if you pumped the accelerator or not. The other half of the time it would turn over but not catch. In between times I could get it to go usually after a bit of a battle, and it would run fine once warm, although still occasionally be a bit of a bastard to start. Once it's going it drives absolutely fine.
The oil is ok, the water is ok (although no antifreeze that I can see). New battery. Oh and it has been to a specialist BMW mechanic for this problem a couple of months back. He couldn't figure it out, but cleared all the codes and it didn't do it for about 2 months. I'm preplexed. The most recent mechanic said it would just be the battery, which clearly it's not.
I can't find much that's useful online, but I have some theories as to what it could be. I think it's one of the following:
- problem with the air flow meter
- fuel pump or filter problem
- crankshaft position sensor
- something in the ignition system failing
- ECU
Is there anything here that I can rule out based on the symptoms? Anything else I should be considering? Where do I start trying to find the problem? Considering I'm a poor student, how can I access the error codes without having to spend a few hundred dollars at a specialist mechanics?
