LA Auto Show 2010 Design Challenge - Mercedes-Benz Biome
The Biome:
The Mercedes-Benz Biome is an ultralight vehicle that utilizes technologies from nature to achieve unparalleled efficiency and seamless integration into the ecosystem.
Mercedes-Benz Symbiosis:
Mercedes-Benz Symbiosis is a system in which the vehicle becomes part of the ecosystem like the leaves of a tree. Symbiosis vehicles collect energy from the sun and store it in chemical bonds, in the form of a fluid called BioNectar4534. Mercedes has also developed technology to retrofit trees with receptors which can harvest their excess solar energy into BN4534. This creates an incentive to plant more trees and collect more energy, while also helping the ecosystem. The vehicle can be composted after its lifespan is complete or used as building material.

2011 Kia Optima Hybrid
Kia Motors held the world premiere of its all-new Optima Hybrid sedan at the Los Angeles Auto Show. Created primarily with the US market in mind, the latest model in Kia's design-led transformation employs a truly innovative Kia-developed powertrain that promises to deliver exceptional hybrid performance and 40 mpg class-leading fuel efficiency. Arriving in Kia dealer showrooms early next year, the 2011 Optima Hybrid is the brand's first-ever hybrid for North America and uses a 'full parallel hybrid system' to deliver a unique blend of performance -- acceleration to 62 mph (100 kph) in 9.2 seconds, top speed 121 mph (195 kph) -- and economy, achieving a 40.7% mpg improvement compared with a regular Optima. 2010 Subaru Impreza Concept (2010 Los Angeles Auto Show)
One of the biggest surprises (so far...) of the 2010 LA Auto Show has to be the Subaru Impreza Design Concept that snuck up on us just a few hours ago. Some thought it might be the long-awaited Subota coupe (a close cousin of the Toyobaru, of course), but in reality what we have here is a conceptual sedan that the Japanese automaker claims will heavily influence future models... namely the Impreza, we'd wager.
Yes, there's a working 2.0-liter naturally-aspirated four-cylinder engine bolted to a CVT gearbox behind that shapely new front grille and its massive side vents, but it's the styling we're really intrigued by

ItalispeedTV - U.S. specification Fiat 500 premiere at the LA Auto Show
Fiat is back on sale in the United States. The U.S.-specification Fiat 500 made its official debut at the LA Auto Show yesterday as Chrysler Group announced its first 130 Fiat dealers and with the small car gearing up to go on sale at the end of the year. The pricing though is at the higher end of expectations, the range starting at US$15,500, which will make the task of hitting the optimistic sales targets all the more demanding to achieve.
"The Fiat 500 has always been the right car at the right time," believes Laura Soave, the recently-apppointed first Head of the Fiat brand in North America. "The new Fiat 500 brings something truly unique to a fast-growing segment in America, delivering Italian-by-design function, value and efficiency intelligently tailored for our market.
"Like the original Cinquecento a half-century ago, the new Fiat 500 changes the rules of personal transportation and delivers a new sense of individual expression and opportunity. At a time when America is getting back to basics with a fresh awareness of the environment, the new Fiat 500 identifies with today's minimalistic attitude and delivers with state-of-the-art eco-friendly technology, and it is wrapped in world-class quality, craftsmanship and style," added Soave yesterday.
The U.S. specification 500 differs somewhat from the European version, both in its slightly clumsy external visual makeover at the front and rear as well as many of its details such as its improved suspension, bigger fuel tank, larger seats with ease-of-entry features to accommodate the increase girth of many consumers in this market and bigger cupholders.
Under the bonnet of the North American 500, which is being built at the Chrysler Group's Toluca factory in Mexico, is the 1.4-litre MultiAir engine. The engine delivers 101 HP (75 kW) at 6,500 rpm and 98 lb/ft (133 Nm) of torque at 4,000 rpm.
The 500 will offer two transmissions for the North American market: significantly a new six-speed automatic transmission which assists fuel economy and improved gearshifting, while for more engaging driving, this transmission allows for driver-selectable gear changes. Should the driver select 'Sport' mode by pressing the button on the instrument panel, the transmission's shift schedule and the steering response are automatically adjusted to provide more sporty driving dynamics. The second option is the usual five-speed manual transmission which, according to Chrysler Group, features new gear ratios for the U.S. market, improving fuel efficiency and acceleration. A self-adjusting hydraulic-clutch system is standard with this transmission, benefiting drivers with consistent pedal efforts over the life of the clutch and virtually maintenance-free operation. Selecting 'Sport' mode with the manual transmission calibrates the pedal-to-throttle relation and the steering response to add greater driving enjoyment.
