Cockpit Management and Data system - COMAND for short - acts as a "command
center" for all audio, telematics and telecommunications functions on
Mercedes-Benz vehicles. Depending on vehicle specification, functions like
the radio, CD player, DVD player, navigation system with dynamic routing,
and amplifiers are all integrated in the COMAND system.
A high-performance processor controls the system and manages the various
programs. If requested by the driver, the CD changer, sound system, TV
receiver, telephone and Linguatronic voice control system can also be
linked up to COMAND via an optical fibre ring bus named D2B or MOST.
The latest generation of the COMAND system used in the Mercedes-Benz
S-Class boasts a large color TFT screen in 16:9 (wide-screen) format, and
uses a multi-directional wheel - located in the center console - to
navigate and use the numerous menus and functions. The system allows the
control of a huge number of features, from seat bolster inflation to the

In my experience, if you are clueless on how to get somewhere, a Nav system
will get you there, but not always using the most logical or quickest
route. My experience so far tell me the my new Mercedes Nav system is the
most ill-logical, worthless, piece of crap, Nav system I've ever owned.
I'd rather not have to rely on my 3 yr old portable Megellan Nav system,
sticking to the windsheld of my $60k new Mercedes, with it's
state-of-the-art Comand Nav System, but I guess if I have to rely on a Nav
system getting me somewhere, I can't trust the Mercedes.

intuitive operation of a range of vehicle functions. The enhanced system
includes an ECO function that plots the most fuel-efficient route, up to 40
GB HDD storage for the navigation system, 3D map display, and PIN-protected
navigation update. It also comes with TMC (Traffic Message Channel) to help
you stay one step ahead of road congestion.
Entertainment highlights include a 7.2 GB Music Register for storing audio
files and a new music search function. This enables you to search by
categories such as album or genre on the hard disk, SD-Card, USB device and
CD/DVD player. You'll also appreciate Bluetooth® connectivity for
hands-free phone calls, the latest Linguatronic voice-control system and a
handy USB port in the glove compartment.

Ever since the first Mercedes S-Class arrived in 1972 it has dominated the
Luxury car sector -- until the excellent Range Rover came along recently.
So can this new one regain its crown?
The Range Rover sets the benchmark for the Mercedes to beat. And starting
at around £70,000, this TDV6 Vogue is our pick of the range. By comparison
the long wheelbase A8 3.0-litre TDI SE seems a bit of a bargain. At less
than £64,000 it's the least expensive car here.
The Mercedes S350 L SE costs two thousand pounds more than the Audi, but
the S-Class is undoubtedly the most luxurious. The Range Rover comes and
impressive second though, with the A8 third.
The S-Class is offered with range of seating options. This one has the
£4000 Executive Seat package but can pay even more to make them recline up
to 43.5 degrees -- that's more than in any other car.
The Audi doesn't have such versatile seats but in the back it's no less
spacious than the Mercedes. It may be big on the outside but the Range
Rover has 80mm less rear legroom than the two Germans.
Bearing in mind that these cars are comfy cruisers, the Mercedes is the
best to drive, followed by the Range Rover and finally the Audi -- on
account of its sporty edge.
Both the Audi A8 and the Range Rover are gadget-laden. You can get posh
stereos, high tech screens, surround cameras and huge sunroofs in those
cars, but being the newest the Mercedes has an advantage. It gets the
latest displays, most advanced nigh vision system and even hot stone
So the S-Class leads the field for technology as well as being the most
luxurious plus the best to drive and to be driven in. But there's just one
last thing we need to consider.
The S-Class's boot capacity is a respectable 510-litres, which is the same
as the Audi A8. However, the Range Rover has a 909-litre capacity and, with
the seats folded, can swallow 2,030 litres.
That means the Range Rover is the most practical and overall it's a better

How To Change The Transmission Fluid On Your Mercedes Benz S500
Servicing the Mercedes-Benz S500 (W220) transmission can be intimidating,
but it's something we must do in order to keep our car running at top
performance. This video will guide you through the process to ensure your
Mercedes transmission runs at peak performance.
***Please read the description and review the video before starting your
transmission fluid change.
This video is for the 722.6 transmission only.
-It's important that your transmission gearbox temperature reaches 80
degrees Celsius before check the fluid level. The level must be between the
low and high fill marks. If its too high please drain off excess fluid by
removing the drain bolt (you do not have to drain the whole transmission
-Regarding the transmission pan- Please remove the forward bolts first
then the middle bolts as this will remove the excess oil that is left
behind in the transmission pan.
-To protect your pan bolts, apply Copper Slip anti-seize compound to the
threads to prevent corrosion.
The quantity of fluid to be replaced varies from car to car.
7.5 liters is recommended for the initial fill. It's also recommended to
have a few liters extra as a backup, however you may not use all 7.5
liters. (We only used 3.5 liters and It's ok to mix old fluid with new
Transmission pan bolts: 8Nn.
