How to check your oil, what does 10w30 mean?
Hey all, thanks for viewing me today. I've had other accounts here on the tube and have wanted to be able to help others understand how to maintain their own vehicles. So I've come up with a plan to video how to do 'simple things' without having to pay a mechanic your retirement fund to get your car fixed. I've been an auto mechanic for 23 years and have mainly used it to save myself LOTS of money without having to pay an ASE Certified Mechanic my savings in order to have a working car. Now it is my turn to help you out, if you want the help that is. I just took a semester (Spring '13) of Auto Technologies schooling and plan to get an Associates in Applied Science Degree. I also just passed the ASE A5 Braking Systems test and I am now Officially Certified by ASE. I'm seeking to become a Master Mechanic. I will go through the simple ways to keep your car maintained without you having to take it to someone like me who may charge you an arm or leg to do very simple things. I will also teach you how to do some less than difficult things, what mechanics call R&R (Remove and Replace), part replacement to save you some $$$. After all this is a recession and why should you go broke to have a running car? 10w30: The "w" means winter. 10 is the thickness rating and is how thick it is at 0 degrees F. The larger the number, the thicker the oil. So 30 is how thick the oil is when the engine is at operating temperature. Yes the oil is THICKER when the engine is hot. I know it doesn't make any sense. When you heat up cooking oil it thins, right? I'll help you understand. Motor Oil has additives in it that cause it to thicken as it gets hot. They call these Polymers or basically plastic. Micro sized polymers mixed into the oil expand as the oil gets hot, thus you have thicker oil. BUT when I drain the oil when it's hot it's thin!? Oil tends to absorb dirt, fuel, moisture over time, thus when the oil is dirty it seems thinner. That is why we change the oil on a regular basis.

Being A Technician Part 1
http://www.ericthecarguy.com/ After the response from the last video I decided to make this one and what it is to actually be a technician. It comes to you in 3 parts because it ran a bit longer than I had anticipated but I've broken it up into categories, this one which is kind of an intro, getting paid as a technician, and finally the work environment. This information is based on my personal experience and may not reflect yours, I encourage you to post video or text responses to this to talk about your experiences and how they may differ. Till then, stay dirty ETCG1
