Rejuvenating a Bosch Motronic Air Flow Meter
Here's a video description of refurbishing a Bosch AFM for a Porsche 924S/944. On a wide open throttle run, it would go flat at ~2000 rpms before getting itself together up towards redline. This is a good thing to check if you're experiencing any kind of random hesitation and have ruled out the obvious stuff, like vacuum leaks, bad plugs/wires/distributor points, oxygen sensor, ect.
This same repair concept probably applies to any other barn door-type AFM, only getting at the inner workings will be different.

Volvo 850 problem..Need advice!!
READ!!
Having some problems with my 96' Volvo 850. Recently changed spark plugs as well as fuel injectors to try and fix problem, didn't work.
Its reving up without me even touching the gas, and burning real rich. Its almost as if its reving up to try and keep itself going. Hooked up an obd scanner that said it was something to do with the mass air flow because of a high input. But i have no clue what i'd have to do to fix that. Also, my Exhaust output is smelling like burnt gas.
I don't know if its because of a bad catalytic converter and I'm not getting enough air flow, the air flow sensor, bad o2 sensor or what. It's just running real rough at the moment.
Oh and that oil behind my car isn't from my vehicle, its from another p.o.s i have lol. But yeah i have no clue as to what the problem is or how to fix it. Anyone had a similar problem or some professional advice? I'd appreciate it much. Thank you.
Volkswagen T3 DJ Air flow meter test
Syncrosimon shows how a simple meter can be used to show if your air flow meter has a good smooth output for the ecu. Lurching and poor running can be attributed to a problem with the AFM and this is a simple test taking around 30 minutes which can rule another thing out.
The meter reading should show a continual and smooth rise in voltage as the air flow gate is opened, this can be done by hand when you remove the 4 10mm bolts holding it to the air filter assembly.
Use pins 2 and 4, they are marked on the afm, for the meter pins. Ignition needs to be switched on when testing without the engine running.
How to test Mass Air Flow Sensor
When I drove my car without the MAFconnected (warning don't drive for long as this will mess your CAT) my car drove very good, no hesitation under load. But on idle it was very rough. With the bad sensor was connected on it would idle ok and hesitate badly under load. This made me guess it was my MAF which was bad. I have replace it with aftermarket and has now fixed the problem. Can't beleive how much more horse power I have got. Cleaning the MAF didn't work for me.

Build a Locost 7: First Engine Start
A HUGE day! :-D
If you're watching the "Build a Locost 7" series, note that this video is way out of sequence, but I just couldn't wait to post it.
First crank doesn't even have fuel in the tank...just testing the electrics. I then pulled the spark plugs, shot a little Mystery Oil in the cylinders. I cranked for 30+ seconds to get the oil system fully primed and everything nice and juicy inside.
Then I messed around for a long time figuring out why the fuel pump wouldn't pump fuel. Turns out I was missing the fuel pump's ground. I also was missing the ground for the air flow meter on the intake, thus disabling the fuel pump.
It took an embarrassingly long time to realize that I never put the plug wires back on. Amazing what a little ignition does for combustion.
Then, when I got all the wiring squared away, it still wouldn't run for long. I think the problem was a couple of missing vacuum hoses, which meant the air flow meter wasn't opening at idle. Maybe not, but after plugging them up, it started running a lot better.
In the last run on this video, I threw it into first gear, and took great delight at seeing the wheels turning. Pity you can't actually see it in the video...it was a glorious sight to behold! Kind of inspires me to go ahead and install the clutch plumbing. ;-)
And the coolant plumbing.
And the brake lines.
Oh, maybe a steering wheel.
Seat belts can wait, I think.
Lights aren't so critical in the day... ;-)
Porsche 924S/944 airflow meter in action
I put my camera and a flashlight inside the airbox to video what the AFM actually does while driving at different speeds/loads. I started out with just normal driving before getting on the main road for a 1st-2nd-some of 3rd run, taking it to redline. The big question I've always wondered is whether or not the flap ever opens completely, and when...and it looks like it never quite reaches the fully open stop. Then on to some running at different throttle positions in different gears.
Project Yuppiemobile Mass Air Flow Sensor
Dropped about $280 on a reman mass air flow sensor six months or so ago. It lasted about a month and then went bad. Cleaned it a couple of times which made it a little better, but not much. Finally gave up and bought a new Bosch off of eBay.

How To Clean a Mass Air Flow Sensor (MAF)
Here I demonstrate the simple steps involved with cleaning your mass airflow sensor. In this particular case I was troubleshooting a rough idle on a 2006 Chevy Colorado 3.5, but these steps can work for almost any vehicle. If you have any questions feel free to post them and I will do my best to help!
