ZF has developed a new automatic transmission for cars with eight speeds that can achieve more than 6% fuel savings. The priority aim in development, however, was not the maximum number of gears, but minimum consumption. ZF engineers had set the bar high to produce a new benchmark for automatic car transmissions. The second generation of the ZF 6HP 6-speed transmission, that entered production only in 2006, defines standards that are hard to top: reaction times faster than human perception, direct engine linkage by early-stage torque converter lock-up and intelligent, adaptive control software, that almost reads the driver's intentions from his foot. But the new transmission is capable of even more - it saves (even more) fuel. https://www.eurocarnews.com - A Blue TEC hybrid features an additional magneto-electric motor and a 7G-TRONIC seven-speed automatic transmission specially configured for the hybrid module, the necessary operating and control electronics, the transformer and a high-voltage lithium-ion battery. During braking the electric motor acts as a generator and is able to recover kinetic energy by a process known as recuperation. During this process the electric motor works together seamlessly with the engine brake of the internal combustion engine and the conventional wheel brakes. The recuperated energy is stored by a compact but efficient lithium-ion battery in the engine compartment and retrieved when required. Major advantages over conventional nickel/metal hydride batteries include a higher energy density and greater electrical efficiency combined with more compact dimensions and a low battery weight. Thanks to space-saving installation in the engine compartment, the trunk capacity and generous interior dimensions remain unchanged. The hybrid module also has a convenient start-stop function.





Honda DCT Module (Dual Clutch Transmission)
Technical explanation: Second-generation Dual Clutch Transmission With the aim of offering products that play a useful role in the lifestyle of its customers, Honda launched the Super Cub C100 (50cc) in 1958. Equipped with an automatic centrifugal clutch mechanism which allowed gear shifting without the need for clutch operation, the Super Cub C100 was a pioneer in the era of automatic systems. In 1962, the Juno M85, which was equipped with a continuously variable hydraulic transmission, was launched. The Eara (750cc) released in 1977 was the first largesized motorcycle in Japan to feature a torque converter automatic transmission. In 1980 that was followed by the Tact, a machine equipped with the Honda-original continuously variable transmission, the V-Matic. To this day, Honda has continued to develop and market motorcycles equipped with a variety of automatic transmission mechanisms. Based on the conviction that the demand for automatic transmissions will increase in the future, even for very sporty models, as people come to regard motorcycles as vehicles that cater to their highly personal tastes, Honda has been conducting research and development into new automatic transmission mechanisms suitable for sports motorcycles for many years now. Against this backdrop, a shift in the age of motorcycle enthusiasts has seen a growing interest in automatic-transmission motorcycles as recreational vehicles for discerning adults of a certain age. In response to such views voiced by our customers and in order to offer a new way to enjoy motorcycles, Honda launched the DN-01 large sports cruiser motorcycle in 2008. This model was the embodiment of a brand-new concept and came equipped with the Human-Friendly Transmission (HFT), a new automatic transmission which incorporated technology developed independently by Honda. Following that, in 2010, Honda launched a large sports tourer motorcycle, the VFR1200F Dual Clutch Transmission, which came equipped with a Dual Clutch Transmission with automated clutch and shift operation, a world's first for motorcycles. This Dual Clutch Transmission is a lightweight, compact system that can be mounted without requiring major modification to the existing engine layout. It employs electronic control technology to deliver the precise accelerator control required of motorcycles, with a direct feel for naturally smooth starts and gear changes. We hope that as many customers as possible will try out this system and experience the direct ride feel and power of our Dual Clutch Transmission system and to that end will continue to make it more lightweight, compact and affordable without impairing its performance. The heart of the entire thing is the engine and transmission so we came up with the idea that if we changed the compression ratio to 14:1 or 13:1 in Canada with regular fuel. How did we do that? By changing valve timing we leave the intake valve open a long time and opening the Exhaust valve late. Then we looked at the lubrication system and said why do we have to have oil pressure all the time? Why don't we lower the oil pressure and raise it when we do. The cooling system so we made the water pump smaller and therefore there is less friction. If we have less drag on the belts we can make them smaller. We also added direct fuel injection. By reducing displacement and thereby lowering frictional losses, a lower specific fuel consumption can be achieved, and this goes hand in hand with better efficiency. The innovative path to the future is the combination of Supercharger and turbocharger. The Supercharger compensates for typical drive-off weakness at low revs of purely turbocharged gasoline engines, while the turbocharger really puts out at higher revs. This combination of two types of chargers is unique among engines mass-produced worldwide. Only FSI technology came into consideration as the injection technology; in the meantime this has become a technology implemented by Volkswagen in numerous car model series. Based on experience acquired by engine developers over the past several years with this injection technology, it was recognized that FSI would be ideally complemented by two different charging technologies and enable previously unheard of efficiency gains. In spite of significantly better driving performance, fuel economy is improved by about 10 percent relative to a comparable naturally aspirated engine.
