There are very few engine differences between the Euro and US M5/M6. But the changes for the US market meant the S38 engine lost 30hp compared to its Euro M88 cousin. One of the big areas of lost horsepower was the exhaust system where the US cars had a catalytic converter and less fancy headers. Thankfully the Euro M88 headers from the M635CSi and Euro M5 are a direct fit to the US S38 engine for an instant power gain. And removing the stock catalytic converter opens up the exhaust for more power as well as avoiding a potential blockage in the exhaust (very bad when on the track). The Euro headers are larger in diameter and equal length. Their design leads to a 10-15hp increase over the stock US headers. And they are a work of art to look at! And true Euro-spec parts never hurt the resale or value of these early M models.

Installing the M5 Euro headers requires additional components in the exhaust. Typically we sell these along with a full Supersprint exhaust (front resonator, center resonator, and rear muffler). Or you can modify your stock exhausr or have an exhaust custom built system built from these headers. The Euro headers use 3-bolt flanges at the outlet whereas the US exhaust has 2-bolt flanges. You will also need new gaskets for the outlet as they are different than the US gaskets (add these to your order from the options below). The cylinder head gaskets are the same on US and Euro cars but new ones are also available below.

1987-1989E24 BMWM6One area where the US M5/M6 is different than a more-powerful Euro-spec model is in the exhaust. The US M5/M6 got a header design with smaller pipes that is more restrictive.
Fitment note: this system is based on the Euro design with 3-bolt flanges (the US used 2-bolt flanges). You will need the factory Euro center section or the Supersprint center section for this to be a direct bolt on.
