This unit and comescomplete with threaded removable 10mm nylon ball sockets both on the rod andtube ends (if you are in need of mounting brackets, ball studs or end fittingssee our selection listed in the store)
If you are looking for areplacement, upgrade or thinking of adding a gas spring to anything you wouldlike assisted power in opening - closing or to be held open hands free this maybe for you. Gas springs offer a unique alternative to conventional mechanical,coil spring or counterbalancing devices. The spring rate for a gas cylinder isfar less than for any type of mechanical spring. The advantages of thesesprings involve the combination of a relatively flat force curve, versatilityof controlled forces, extension speed, damping at the end of the stroke alongwith a very compact design. Each gas spring contains a specific amount of oil,which lubricates the seal, piston and piston rod, as well as acting as adamping medium. The oil within the cylinder, when it is compressed or extended,moves from one side of the piston head to the other, providing a dampingeffect.
Replacement TIP: There are many brands of gas springs / shocks / strutsmanufactured today with just about as many names Nitrogen gas, gas, struts,springs, shocks, dampers etc. , some have a part number that is as equallyconfusing to understand with out a reference guide! If you are looking to addor replace any gas shocks (they all get weak, worn, bent or broken and need tobe replaced at some time) it is easier than you think, here are the basics
1. Just measure the extended length ofyour shock (from the center of the socket to the center of the socket) that’s thelength (that was easy!)
2. If you donot know the force pressure, and it is not listed on the shock (most times itis encoded in the part number on the shock) you can always do a simple test, IEcamper topper lid … use a scale to measure the force needed to hold the door open!
a. Be sure to take the oldstruts off!
b. PLACE the scale at the point the strutconnects to the door / lid (at the bracket)
c. IF 2 struts are useddivide the weight in half.
Thatwill get you really close
3. Shocks can come in the same lengthand force pressure but different in physical size (rod diameter / tubediameter- 6x15 / 8x18 / 10x22 / 14x28 MM etc) I think of the physical size interms of ratings … standard duty (6x15mm) … heavy duty (8x18) … extra heavyduty (10x22), and when nothing else will do use the maxi 14x22MM
4. Mounting brackets / studs can bepermanent or replaceable the most common are the ball and socket style (10mm or13MM) then the ring / eye style. Many shocks come with threaded ends to allowfor interchangeable configurations. If you have the option I like to use theball and socket when ever adding a shock as it is much more flexible then thering / eye style.
Removal TIP: it is very easy to replace most gassprings / shocks/ struts, the most common connection used is the nylon “balljoint socket” to remove your old unit simply insert a “flat” blade screwdriverunder the spring clip (you do not have to remove the clip) using the slotprovided in the back of the socket, push the screwdriver down just a bit thiscauses the spring clip to open and it will release the ball end. The new unitnow just “pushes” on and snaps in place, that’s it you’re done!
